Shanghai Statement – ‘The Future of Higher Education’

http://enews.ksu.edu.sa/wp-content/uploads/2011/10/UWN.jpgFollowing their first global meeting in Shanghai earlier this month, 33 higher education research and policy experts from around the world published the ‘Shanghai Statement’ calling for greater intellectual input, data, policy analysis and professional training for the world’s expanding and increasingly important higher education sector. The “International Higher Education Research and Policy Roundtable” was organised by the Center for International Higher Education, or CIHE, from Boston College in the United States, hosted by Shanghai Jiao Tong University and supported by the Innovation, Higher Education and Research for Development, or IHERD, programme of the Swedish International Development Agency. More...

What the Open-Data Movement Means for the Future of Colleges

http://chronicle.com/img/photos/biz/next-45.pngBy Jeff Selingo. During the partial shutdown of the federal government, which ended Wednesday night after 16 days, it was the barricades closing national parks and monuments that received a disproportionate share of media attention related to the budget standoff. Few seemed to care that useful online databases of statistics about higher education, such as the College Navigator and the College Scorecard, went dark (except a handful of reporters and perhaps those who didn’t want to take time off from the college search). UUK publishes report on the funding challenges facing universities

Universities UK (UUK) has this month published a new report entitled “The funding challenge for universities”.

Focusing on England in particular, the report examines the “challenges for universities and government in funding any expansion of student numbers, given the backdrop of current funding restraints”. Drawing on research by the Institute for Fiscal Studies [IFS], the report calls for consideration of funding options that are “sustainable and ensure that higher education remains accessible to all applicants”.

For more information on the key findings and themes in the report please see the UUK press release.

Willetts on Robbins – Yesterday, today and tomorrow

http://t3.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcQOQ2e8mceWyPVVFcJDlyvxthNhmSR7fCNS1SUDStQIOlwqvtcjS6qaiABy Jan Petter Myklebust. Fifty years ago the Robbins Report proposed massive expansion of higher education in the United Kingdom – up to 300% over the next two decades. In a report on Robbins, current Universities Minister David Willetts calculates that with British births on the rise again, university places for new entrants will need to rise by another 25% by 2035.
Looking at the number of would-be higher education students who reapply for university after a first rejection, there was unmet demand today of around 50,000 students, Willetts found. Increasing this figure in line with expected demographic change to 2035 would mean the 368,000 current places for first-year students would need to rise to 460,000 entrants.
Willetts authored a report, titled Robbins Revisited: Bigger and better higher education, published by the Social Market Foundation on the 50th anniversary of the hugely influential report of a committee led by Lord Lionel Robbins in October 1963. More...

Paving the way toward the MDGs and beyond

http://profile.ak.fbcdn.net/hprofile-ak-ash1/373024_144756703655_988472135_q.jpgThis blog is by Susan Nicolai from the UK-based Overseas Development Institute (ODI) and is part of the Wikiprogress post-2015 series
Global development targets were high on the agenda at the 68th United Nations General Assembly held a month ago in New York. While this involved what one colleague described as the ultimate post-2015 talk-fest, as much or more time was spent on the current Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) and last-ditch efforts to speed progress before their end date. A range of heads of state, world leaders and celebrities weighed in with their own calls to action and reported pledges of over USD 3 billion. Covering the final two years of MDG implementation, it is vital to make the most of these commitments.
Here at ODI’s Development Progress, we asked a range of development experts how they would focus these efforts to accelerate MDG progress. Our eight contributors spanned the continents and hailed from a range of backgrounds, having worked with civil-society groups, policy think-tanks, the United Nations, and the World Bank.
We asked a simple question: ‘What do you see as the single most important thing needed to accelerate progress toward the MDGs?’ Perhaps unsurprisingly, the answers were as complex as the messy world of development. Still, some headlines came through. More...

WISE – Can universities keep up with the future?

http://t3.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcQOQ2e8mceWyPVVFcJDlyvxthNhmSR7fCNS1SUDStQIOlwqvtcjS6qaiABy Yojana Sharma. Can university leaders ensure that their institutions keep up with rapid changes in technology and shifts in local and global economies? The International Association of University Presidents, or IAUP, session at the WISE conference in Doha sparked considerable debate on whether universities can survive to serve ‘emerging generations’.
The fifth World Innovation Summit for Education – WISE – was held at the Qatar National Convention Centre from 29-31 October, on the theme of “Reinventing Education for Life”. It attracted more than 1,200 delegates from over 100 countries. More...

EFMD's Global Focus - See the Future

https://www.efmd.org/templates/efmd/images/efmd_logo.jpgThis is the 21st issue of the magazine since it was launched in January 2007, so we can, to some extent, claim that Global Focus has “come of age”.
Global Focus was conceived as a way of improving communication between the EFMD and its members. But it was always regarded as something rather more sophisticated than a simple PR tool. It was seen as a forum for lively debate and information on the major current issues of management education and a way for EFMD to formulate, consolidate and share policy on the basis of its European underpinning and its increasingly global outreach and vision.
It has played a full part in the work of EFMD, publicising and reporting on meetings and conferences and providing background briefings and interviews with key speakers as well as, for example, explaining the development of policy in key areas such as accreditation. The seven years covered by these 21 issues have, of course, been among the most volatile and disruptive in the long history of management education. And their effects have yet to become totally apparent.
Global Focus has worked hard to keep up with these developments though a wide range of articles and features that particularly address the key issues facing EFMD member organisations. Many of the sector’s best-known and most effective thinkers and players have contributed articles or shared their thoughts in interviews. More...
