A woman from China has been sentenced to two years for running an immigration scam that helped foreign students get around Canada’s English-language proficiency requirement by having imposters write their tests. Angela Wang pleaded guilty to multiple immigration violations after she was arrested at Toronto’s Pearson airport on April 4 carrying 11 counterfeit Chinese passports in her luggage. More...

A pole on the Thompson Rivers University campus will be flying the flag of the Tk'emlups Indian Band as the two signed a memorandum of understanding to formalize their co-operative relationship. TIB Chief Shane Gottfriedson and TRU president Alan Shaver shook hands and exchanged gifts Monday morning after signing the agreement. 
"We truly believe the memorandum of understanding and the language in it speaks volumes on our relationship," said Gottfriedson. 
The two dignitaries pointed out that TRU's roots began on the band land, as Cariboo College held its first year of classes there. Cariboo College was born on the TIB, now, like a growing child, it has matured into a university. More...

By Kirk Semple. The New Jersey Legislature approved legislation on Thursday that would allow students without legal immigration status to pay in-state college tuition. Gov. Chris Christie planned to sign it on Friday, a spokesman said.
The bill’s passage was assured after Mr. Christie, a Republican, struck a deal with Democratic lawmakers, who agreed to a demand of his that they change the bill to remove a provision allowing undocumented immigrants access to state financial aid programs. More...

PetiteBy Sara Custer. After three months of negotiations, a coalition agreement between Germany’s biggest political parties has been reached. Among objectives to freeze taxes and lower the retirement age, the new government aims to increase international students studying in Germany to 350,000 by 2020 and increase outbound mobility to 50% of all higher education students. 
In the 185-page agreement between Chancellor Angela Merkel’s centre-right Christian Democratic Union (CDU), its Bavarian sister party the Christian Social Union (CSU) and the centre-left Social Democratic Party (SPD) the government says: “By the end of the decade we will see to it that the number of foreign students is increased by about a third, to about 350,000.” 
The goals reflect The German Academic Exchange Service’s (DAAD) Strategy 2020 released in February of this year that intends to increase inbound and outbound mobility in Germany’s higher education institutions. More...
