Unis dürfen über ihren Haushalt, ihr Studienangebot und Personal selbstverantwortlich entscheiden. Sie tun das bislang recht erfolgreich: Die Hochschulen haben viele neue Studienplätze geschaffen, sie sind attraktiv für Studenten mit unterschiedlicher Herkunft, sie reüssieren in der Forschung. In der Exzellenzinitiative etwa hat NRW neben Baden-Württemberg die meisten Mittel eingeworben. Um das Hochschulfreiheitsgesetz, das 2006 von dem damaligen FDP-Minister Andreas Pinkwart eingeführt wurde, werden die Hochschulleiter in NRW von ihren Kollegen in anderen Bundesländern beneidet. Die Studentenzahl hat sich in den vergangenen sieben Jahren verdoppelt. Und die Uni erwartet weiteren Zuwachs. Eines haben Ex-Außenminister Guido Westerwelle, die frühere Skirennläuferin Katja Seizinger und Fußball-Manager Oliver Bierhoff gemeinsam: Sie alle haben an der einzigen öffentlich-rechtlichen Fernuniversität in Hagen studiert oder promoviert. 88.000 Studenten zählt die nordrhein-westfälische Fernuni - so viele wie keine andere deutsche Hochschule. Jahrelang warben sogenannte Bologna-Experten für die Studienreform, nun müssen sie ihre Arbeit einstellen, analysiert das Hochschulmagazin "duz". Dabei gäbe es noch viel zu tun.
In Deutschland wird Gerhard Schröder neuer Bundeskanzler, die Terrororganisation Rote Armee Fraktion löst sich auf und die Rechtschreibreform tritt in Kraft. Das war 1998. Im gleichen Jahr unterschrieben einige EU-Bildungsminister die Sorbonne-Erklärung und setzten damit die Initialzündung für den Bologna-Prozess. Die wesentlichen Ziele: Mobilere Studierende, international wettbewerbsfähigere Hochschulen und Absolventen, die bessere Chancen auf dem Arbeitsmarkt haben. Strenuous competition between universities helped boost the number of new undergraduates in the UK to record levels in 2013, allowing British universities to shrug off the impact of hiking tuition fees to £9,000 and accept close to half a million students. What's the worst question you've been asked in a job interview? Students at Bournemouth uni were asked how many people they'd slept with when they were interviewed for a job at the student union bar last week. Sex-related questions were meant to relax the students before their formal interviews. According to the Tab, freshers were encouraged to make awkward confessions, such as wetting themselves and accidentally pulling members of their own sex. More...
