6 Big Takeaways From the EdX Global Forum

By Joshua Kim. Were you in Boston last week for the 4th edX Global Forum? What were your big takeaways from the meeting? First, I’d like to say thank you to our Boston University hosts. They did an incredible job of making us all feel welcome and well looked after. I also want to say thank you to the edX team, as they all worked incredibly hard to make this event as productive and enjoyable for all the Consortium members. Read more...

Traditional Ph.D. Programs and Alt-Ac Careers

By Joshua Kim. I wouldn’t trade my current alt-ac career or my traditional PhD graduate degree for anything. My alternative academic (alt-ac) career in digital learning at Dartmouth’s Center for the Advancement of Learning (DCAL) is endlessly challenging and constantly invigorating. The gig enables me to collaborate with the most amazing faculty and non-faculty educators on the planet. Read more...

21 Questions About Academic Center/Department/Unit Communications

By Joshua Kim. I have two intuitions about center/department/unit communications. First, that communicating is an essential part of our work.  Second, that we (or I) have no idea about what constitutes effective communication practices. Read more...

934 (Mostly) Kindle Wish List Books

By Joshua Kim. What should we make of these 934 Kindle books in my Wish List?  What questions can we ask about this list? What books on this list have you read and would you recommend?  How do our book Wish List’s overlap?  How many books in your Wish List?  Is your Wish List like my Wish List, dominated by e-books?  Would you be willing to share your Wish List with our IHE community? More of This, Please

http://www.insidehighered.com/sites/default/server_files/styles/large/public/confessions_of_a_community_college_dean_blog_header.jpgBy Matt Reed. Although much of the debate about higher education policy happens at the Federal level, the decisions that matter the most on the ground are usually made by the states. That’s why I was so pleased to see this piece by Jessica Bowen, of the New America Foundation. Read more...

A “Worst Practices” Model

http://www.insidehighered.com/sites/default/server_files/styles/large/public/confessions_of_a_community_college_dean_blog_header.jpgBy Matt Reed. At a meeting last week, a colleague mentioned that he had learned some lessons about how to do a particular project through making a series of mistakes, and that if we had more time, he’d be happy to describe some of them. And that’s when it hit me. For all of the talk of “best practices,” wouldn’t some open discussions of “worst practices” be more useful? Read more...

Reaching the Range

http://www.insidehighered.com/sites/default/server_files/styles/large/public/confessions_of_a_community_college_dean_blog_header.jpgBy Matt ReedIn a group discussion recently, several professors brought up the challenge of teaching a class in which the range of student preparation levels stretches from “coulda gone anywhere, if not for money and family issues” to “not yet reading at a college level.”  When you have students at either end of that continuum, and at all points in between, in the same room at the same time, reaching all of them isn’t easy. Journal Accepts Profanity-Laden Joke Paper

HomeThe paper was written in 2005 and never meant for publication. But it appears “Get Me Off Your Fucking Mailing List” has found a potential spot in the International Journal of Advanced Computer Technology. Although the paper consists of just those seven words, over and over again, a journal review form states that the submission from Peter Vamplew, associate professor of engineering at IT at Australia’s Federation University, is “excellent.” Thing is, Vamplew didn’t write the paper; he merely forwarded a copy of the bogus article written by two other, now-associate professors of computer science, David Mazieres, of Stanford University, and Eddie Kohler, of Harvard University.
