UC Davis Lessons: Open is as open does

There is an interesting angle here in that Sakai is open source yet data is not easily recoverable.

This comment came from the original post discussing UC Davis’ SmartSite disaster when their Sakai hosting partner Scriba botched a data center move, leading to a university of 32,000+ students going without a fully-functional LMS for the last three weeks of a term, including finals week. More...

The application process to attend OpenCon 2016 is now open

ESU - European Students' UnionOpenCon 2016 will take place on November 12-14 in Washington, DC. and seeks to bring together effective, engaged students and early career academic professionals from around the world to advance Open Access, Open Education, and Open Data—regardless of their ability to pay for travel costs. The conference is hosted by SPARC and the Right to Research Coalition.
The application is available at http://www.opencon2016.org/apply and includes the opportunity to apply for a travel scholarship. Applications will close on July 11th at 11:59pm U.S. Pacific Time. More...

Opening Up Education in Europe

The European Commission’s Institute for Prospective Technological Studies (IPTS) is closely involved in work on the agenda for open education (OE) in Europe. It is running a number of studies on behalf of the Directorate General Education and Culture (DG EAC) to highlight the state of play of OE in Member States and carry out research to support policy making. IPTS’ current project ‘Policies for Opening Up Education’ (OpenEdu Policies) looks at the best way ahead for effective policies at both national and European levels. It follows up on the OpenEdu study, which proposed a framework for higher education institutions based on 10 dimensions of open education. IPTS has two upcoming reports on this research: ‘OpenCases: Case Studies on Openness in Education’ and ‘Opening Up Education: A Support Framework for Higher Education Institutions’.
