Keynote presentation delivered to Open Access Week, Nova Scotia Community College

Stephen DownesOpen Access and Open Learning- Keynote presentation delivered to Open Access Week, Nova Scotia Community College, Online via BB Collaborate.
Over time, as resources have become more open, open learning has come to mean a form of learning where students can pick their own resources, identify their own learning goals, and set their own pace. More recently open learning has come to include concepts like open assessments and open credentials. In this talk, open learning advocate and pioneer I discuss the evolution of open learning, highlighting the vital role played by open access, and discuss current and future trends, including massive open online courses (MOOCs), learning analytics, and personal learning environments.

OERs and Open Online Courses

http://farm2.static.flickr.com/1319/557965840_6e7f0755db_m.jpgKeynote presentation delivered to World Innovation Summit in Education, Doha, Qatar.

Discussion of the role of OERs in MOOCs, with particular attention to the MOOC we are offering with UdeM in French on OERs (RELs in French). Originally planned to be delivered in English, then when the French-language speaker wasn't able to make it I tried to switch to French, but the effort failed miserably. But we proceeded with a live translator, so the audio begins in French, then switches to English with French translation. And I learn I still need to work a lot more on my conversational (technical) French.

OER & Intellectual Property Rights : “Rien ne va plus”

http://t1.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcSZZe22GTTQ20BJpVUZirGINg2eVVmwhjCWqUWqHsw5MRSfwe_zrhbol9kBy Pierre-Antoine Ullmo. Shareable, reusable and free. The magic cocktail of Open Educational Resources (OER) is seen by many as THE opportunity to transform learning and teaching practices. New apps have been developed to enable teachers to create lesson plans or class books, edit them in a few minutes, share them with their students, enrich them with their comments, and keep track of the work they do on it in order to monitor and personalize their learning processes. Apparently, new contents emerge. More...

http://t1.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcSZZe22GTTQ20BJpVUZirGINg2eVVmwhjCWqUWqHsw5MRSfwe_zrhbol9kEducators and researchers working in the field of Open Educational Resources (OER) are invited to participate in a survey aimed at developing and validating a set of quality and pedagogical guidelines for the use of OER in higher education.
University and college educators, researchers, and other stakeholders with expertise in the field of OERs are asked to contribute 10 minutes of their time to complete an online survey to help validate the quality and pedagogical guidelines for OER use in higher education.
The study is funded by the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS). The principal investigators leading the study are Professors Insung Jung and Teruyoshi Sasaki of the International Christian University, Japan. They would be happy to share results of the survey with respondents upon request. Please direct any questions about the study in general, or about the survey in particular, to Professor Jung.
Responses will be accepted until November 15, 2013. Thank you very much in advance for lending your time, experience and expertise to this important and exciting project, and for sharing this information with others who may be interested! Click here to go to the survey now.

Countdown until Sir John Daniel officially launches the OER university web site

http://t1.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcSZZe22GTTQ20BJpVUZirGINg2eVVmwhjCWqUWqHsw5MRSfwe_zrhbol9kThe clock is ticking down to the highly anticipated launch of the Open Educational Resource university (OERu) website. It will be unveiled for the first time on 1 November, 2013. OERu is a virtual collaboration of like-minded institutions committed to creating flexible pathways for OER learners to gain formal academic credit.
At the OER university, anyone with an internet connection and the motivation to learn can study world-class courses for free. Even better, those courses will count towards real qualifications. All of the courses are based on OERs, so students can access the materials freely online without having to pay for textbooks. The courses are designed for independent study, but learners can support each other through the networking channels available.
On Friday November 1, Sir John Daniel will officially launch the OER university website. The institutions of higher education that form the partners of the Open Education Resource university initiative are doing all of their planning for the launch event in the open.  It is important to note that it is not a conference but rather an implementation planning meeting.
In addition, anyone can register to attend the launch event online.

Open Access Week

http://t1.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcSZZe22GTTQ20BJpVUZirGINg2eVVmwhjCWqUWqHsw5MRSfwe_zrhbol9kOpen Access Week, a global event now entering its sixth year, is an opportunity for the academic and research community to discuss the potential benefits of Open Access. Participants can share what they’ve learned with colleagues and to help inspire wider participation in helping to make Open Access a new norm in scholarship and research.
“Open Access” to information – the free, immediate, online access to the results of scholarly research, and the right to use and re-use those results as you need – has the power to transform the way research and scientific inquiry are conducted. It has direct and widespread implications for academia, medicine, science, industry, and for society as a whole.
Open Access (OA) has the potential to maximize research investments, increase the exposure and use of published research, facilitate the ability to conduct research across available literature, and enhance the overall advancement of scholarship. Research funding agencies, academic institutions, researchers and scientists, teachers, students, and members of the general public are supporting a move towards Open Access in increasing numbers every year. Open Access Week is a key opportunity for all members of the community to take action to keep this momentum moving forward. More...

Examining the potential and reality of open educational resources: the 2013 COHERE conference

http://www.tonybates.ca/wp-content/uploads/asssociates.jpgBy Tony Bates. COHERE (Collaboration for Online Higher Education and Research) runs one of my favourite annual conferences. It is relatively small (around 75), the participants are mainly leading practitioners in online learning, and the sessions are excellent, usually encompassing leading developments in online learning, research reports, and extensive discussion from people in the front line of online learning. (Click here for a report on the 2012 conference.)
This year, the conference, jointly sponsored by the Canadian Society for the Study of Higher Education (CSSHE), and held at Kwantlen Polytechnic University’s Richmond campus in British Columbia, focused on ‘Open Resources, Open Courses: their Impact on Blended and Online Learning’. More...

Open access: six myths to put to rest

http://static.guim.co.uk/static/c55907932af8ee96c21b7d89a9ebeedb4602fbbf/common/images/logos/the-guardian/news.gifBy Peter Suber. Open access to research is still held back by misunderstandings repeated by people who should know better, says Peter Suber. Open access to academic research has never been a hotter topic. But it's still held back by myths and misunderstandings repeated by people who should know better. The good news is that open access has been successful enough to attract comment from beyond its circle of pioneers and experts. The bad news is that a disappointing number of policy-makers, journalists and academics opine in public without doing their homework. More...
