Fin décembre 2015, la région compte 1 165 150 salariés dans les secteurs marchands non agricoles. Depuis le début de l'année, l'emploi ne cesse de progresser dans la région même s'il évolue à un rythme inférieur à celui d'avant la crise de 2008. Les hausses consécutives de l'emploi sur les quatre trimestres de 2015 ont ainsi permis la création nette de près de 13 700 emplois sur un an, soit une progression de +1,2 %. La région Languedoc-Roussillon Midi-Pyrénées enregistre la plus forte hausse en France.

Selon l'Insee, le secteur marchand a créé, au premier trimestre 2016, 40 400 emplois (+159 600 en 1 an) et les entreprise investissent dans le même temps, ce qui laisse présager, selon Mathieu Plane, économiste à l'OFCE "une reprise".
