Blog-Connecting to David Gurteen & Knowledge Cafes

By Stephen Downes - Stephen's Web. Christian Long[Edit][Delete]: Blog-Connecting to David Gurteen & Knowledge Cafes, think:lab [Edit][Delete] December 27, 2005

[link: 0 Hits] I have been thinking about the concept of 'community of communities' recently (as opposed to the mass-market concept of communities fostered by sites such as Technorati) and the question of how knowledge and ideas flow through such a distributed network. And it's like this, via connectors from one community to the next. And just so, this post from Christian Long connects me to the Gurteen Knowledge Community, something worth exploring - what is interesting is that Gurteen has explicitly adopted the model of 'Knowledge Cafés' as a model of learning, "mini-workshops where the participants engage in the theme of the evening. Knowledge Sharing with Distributed Networking Tools

By Stephen Downes - Stephen's Web. Leigh Blackall and Sean FitzGerald: Knowledge Sharing with Distributed Networking Tools, September 15, 2005

Nicely done wiki presentation (so you can add to it) of the topic, beautifully illustrated and rich with links and examples. Topics covered include personalized media, social software, RSS feeds (which they call web feeds, even though they shouldn't), tagging, Creative Commons licensing, the network learning model and future VLEs. Why knowledge is the most important resource for education systems today

Education & Skills TodayEducation systems in developed countries today are huge – in terms of people, institutions and budgets – and emerging nations are rapidly catching up, as they expand their own educational infrastructure. Such large systems do not run on money, alone. Knowledge is probably the most important resource that education systems need to turn money and infrastructure into the outcomes that societies expect of them. More...

ESJ: A Strategy for Personal Knowledge Management

By Stephen Downes - Stephen's Web. ESJ: A Strategy for Personal Knowledge Management
Exploration of PKM - 'personal knowledge management' - and its relatyion to e-portfolios. Mostly a summary by Jack Vinson on James McGee's presentation, which has been reproduced on McGee's blog (took me a bit to figure that out, as Bloglines killed the blockquote). More...

From E-learning to E-knowledge

By Stephen Downes - Stephen's Web. From E-learning to E-knowledge
Some good stuff in this discussion of the relationship between e-learning and content management. For example: "knowledge-based economies are driven by a free flow and intermeshing of data, information, and knowledge, where value is created from an ever-increasing reservoir of abundance. In such circumstances where resources are themselves not scarce value must be created in novel ways." And his account of the facets of knowledge is basically sound. More...

Chapter 2. The nature of knowledge and the implications for teaching

By Stephen Downes - Stephen's Web. Chapter 2. The nature of knowledge and the implications for teaching
Tony Bates, B.C. Open Textbooks, Jul 24, 2014
This is chapter two of an open textbook being developed by Tony Bates, but I confess that i would have approached the subject matter - the nature of knowledge - very differently. The debates over the yeaars concern less the classification of knowledge and are concerned more about the nature, creation and justification of knowledge. More...

Knowledge Management Systems

By Stephen Downes - Stephen's Web. Knowledge Management Systems
George Siemens links to this useful course outline linking to numerous useful works on knowledge management. He comments, "When an instructor puts a course like this online (as compared to a password-protected LMS), many people benefit (and the institution doesn't really lose anything by sharing)." Quite right. More...

International Journal of Knowledge and Learning

By Stephen Downes - Stephen's Web. International Journal of Knowledge and Learning
Miltiadis D. Lytras announces "that the inaugural double issue of the International Journal of Knowledge and Learning, published by Inderscience, is available from our official web site." The issue starts off with a manifesto which is itself well worth a look, even if only for the useful diagrams mapping the field the journal intents to cover. More...
