The Leiden Manifesto in "Nature"

From that conference a list of principles has emerged which is now known as the Leiden Manifesto. The journal Nature has published it as a comment by Diana Hicks of the Georgia Institute of Technology, Ismael Rafois of the Polytechnic University of Valencia and Paul Wowters, Ludo Waltman, and Sarah de Rijke of CWTS. The Earth Statement: for an ambitious, science-based, equitable outcome to COP21 in Paris

Our civilization has never faced such existential risks as those associated with global warming, biodiversity erosion and resource depletion. Our societies have never had such an opportunity to advance prosperity and eradicate poverty. We have the choice to either finally embark on the journey towards sustainability or to stick to our current destructive “business-as-usual” pathway.
Three times this year, world leaders will meet to set the course for decades to come. In July 2015, heads of state meet in Addis Ababa to discuss Financing for Development. EUA observes one-minute silence to commemorate victims of the Garissa university attack

IAU_Horizons_vol_21_1In preparation for the IAU Global Meeting of Associations 6, this issue - IAU Horizons, 21, 1 - offers reports on IAU priority areas, new projects and initiatives, especially LGEU, and upcoming events and conferences.

The IAU is very pleased to launch a unique leadership programme entitled: Leading Globally Engaged Universities (LGEU). The first session will be hosted by the University of Malaya in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, from 15-20 November 2015. The programme will take place two times a year and will move from region to region, hosted by the IAU Members.
The quality of higher education leadership is essential to the well-being of universities but expectations and responsibilities of higher education institutions are expanding while the local and global context is continuously changing, making leadership more complex. Recognizing the challenges, IAU has developed the LGEU programme to support new and future leaders of Higher Education Institutions building on its unique capacity to bring together experts and peers from different parts of the world.. AIU Horizons, volume 21, numéro 1, vient de paraître!

En vue de la 6e Réunion mondiale des Associations de l’AIU, un numéro spécial d’AIU Horizons est envoyé aux Membres et mis à disposition en ligne. AIU Horizons Volume 21,1.
Ce numéro réunit des rapports sur les activités de l’AIU, sur de nouveaux projets et initiatives – tels LGEU -, sur les rencontres et Conférences à venir.
Le dossier thématique est cette fois aligné avec le thème du GMA-6 et présente une série de points de vue contrastés sur la question de l’innovation sociale: défis et perspectives pour l’enseignement supérieur.
Ce numéro comprend des papiers du président de l’AIU, du Canada, de Suède, Jamaïque, Thaïlande, Espagne, Malaisie, Etats-Unis, Afrique du Sud, Mexique, OUI-IOHE, UDUAL, Ashoka. Ce dossier, nous l’espérons, saura animer de nouveaux débats dans vos établissements, réseaux et organisations.
Par ailleurs, le magazine présente les nouveaux Membres que l’AIU est heureuse d’accueillir, ses publications les plus récentes et une sélection de publications reçues, des appels à participation à des publications ou projets.

Leave behind the digital dark ages – or face a student rebellion

In our World Blog, John Traxler says universities are lagging so far behind people on the street in the use of digital technology that taxpayers are entitled to ask why they are subsiding a system that is so out of touch and why students at the end of three years must still sit silent, alone and use a pen to answer exam questions. Will the masses, connected by mobiles and social media, overthrow the established order with its institutions, officials and values?
In Commentary, Hayes Tang says the student leaders in Hong Kong’s Umbrella Movement are redefining the meaning of political participation and challenging the role of capitalism in higher education. Nigel Carrington says if the UK succumbs to growing political pressure to pull out of the European Union it could damage knowledge creation by re-introducing borders restricting the influx of staff and students from member countries. And Ranjit Goswami says scrapping the University Grants Commission will not ensure that quality follows quantity in India’s universities: the priority now is to focus on outcomes.
In Features, Linda Yeung finds out how the Asian University for Women judges candidates for admission on their reaction to injustice and ability to empathise with the downtrodden. And Wachira Kigotho reports on fears that with Africa offering some of the world’s most lucrative business opportunities, foreign business schools are opening up a new ‘colonial frontier’ and carving up the continent.
