Innovations Stalled by 'Not-Invented-Here'?

By Thomas Carey. A “not invented here” bias on the part of faculty is often cited as a factor in inhibiting the spread and adaptation of innovations in teaching and learning practice. The “bias” part alludes to a prejudgment that what we create locally will be better-suited to our teaching needs and learning contexts than an adaptation of work done elsewhere would be. More...

Speaking “Innovation” with a Local Accent

http://www.insidehighered.com/sites/default/server_files/styles/large/public/confessions_of_a_community_college_dean_blog_header.jpgBy Matt Reed. I’ve been fascinated by accents since I was a kid. My Dad was from Tennessee originally, and even after decades away from the South, you could still hear it. I’d watch movies and get obsessed with a character’s accent. It struck me as amazing that most people in a given region would agree, informally, to speak differently than people using the same language elsewhere. Read more...

http://hastac.org/files/imagecache/homepage_50/pictures/picture-79-873560aec16bee4b69793f2fa0fbd715.jpgBy Cathy Davidson. We're all abuzz here with conversation, analysis, dismay, and all the rest about a recent article in the Atlantic that paints a grim picture of the way even the City University of New York--arguably the most equitable public education in America, where over 80% of our graduates leave tuition-debt free--still does not escape the inequality (and especially racial inequality) embedded it American education.  We are even more abuzz, I'd say, with this mornings CORRECTIONS coming from official CUNY sources:  http://www1.cuny.edu/mu/forum/2015/01/14/response-to-the-story-in-the-atlantic/.
