The Conversation is Evolving

By Stephen Downes - Stephen's Web. Darren Kuropatwa: The Conversation is Evolving, A Difference November 29, 2005

The discussion around the blocking of blogs in schools, leading toward what may emerge as a statement or organization. In the mean time, some interesting links, including to this big list of proxy bypasses, this response to Flickr blockage, a link to Guy Bensusan on censorship, a wiki page with more links, a moot court case on web blockages, and this great summary of a research report questioning the need for internet censorship at all. Show Your Hand, Not Your ID

By Stephen Downes - Stephen's Web. Vincent Kiernan: Show Your Hand, Not Your ID, Chronicle of Higher Education November 29, 2005

I got an email from the Chronicle this morning, remarkable in itself, advising of an article and forum "the readers of Stephen's Web might be interested in participating in." It's a good item in and of itself, exploring the use of biometrics at schools to manage access or even to get meals at the cafeteria. As you can expect, the usual issues about privacy arise, which is the basis of the online discussion to follow. More...

mIDm

By Stephen Downes - Stephen's Web. Stephen Downes: mIDm, Stephen's Web November 29, 2005

Following the article posted earlier today (see above) this page provides access to information and downloads supporting the mIDm application, my version of an approach to distributed identity management on the web. This page is a permanent resource, not simply an article, and will be updated with additional resources as they come available. [Tags: None] [Comment]. More...

Options

By Stephen Downes - Stephen's Web. Stephen Downes: Options, Stephen's Web November 28, 2005
In addition to some design changes (most noticable to GMail readers, and still in progress) you should notice a new 'Options' link at the top of your newsletter today. Over the weekend I filled a large hole in my website software by rewriting the login script to manage subscriptions and user options. You may be interested to note that the script now supports FOAF (both as input and output), albeit in a minimal way. It is now also a fully-functioning mIDm application - more about that tomorrow. In the mean time, the major change for you is this: you now have to log in to unsubscribe. I hesitated to do this, but the way it was before, someone could set up an automated script and unsubscribe everyone. If you want to unsubscribe, click on the options link - if you have lost your user ID and password, you can have it emailed to you. Anyhow, if you have any problems at all with login and options, please let me know - it should be working properly, but you know me and software... Smart Internet 2010

By Stephen Downes - Stephen's Web. Tom Hoffman: Smart Internet 2010, ESchool News September 8, 2005

Summary of a recent report released in Australia, Smart Internet 2010. The comment from Boing Boing is (typically) condescending: "It covers a lot of ground (much of it likely familiar to you if you're a regular BB reader), aimed at a general audience (e.g., net-clueless regulators)". More...

Semantic MediaWiki: Attributes and Relations

By Stephen Downes - Stephen's Web. Graham Glass: Semantic MediaWiki: Attributes and Relations, September 7, 2005

I'm somewhat intrigued by the idea of a semantic wiki, but express caution that it could get complex (and hence, obscure) in a hurry. I mean, straightforward prfopositions involving concrete entities ("Berlin is the capital of [[is capital of::Germany]], Berlin has [[population:=3.390.444]] inhabitants" seem so intuitive. More...

SSHRC - National Consultation on Research Data Archiving

By Stephen Downes - Stephen's Web. Press Release: SSHRC - National Consultation on Research Data Archiving, Management and Access Systems, September 7, 2005

I hadn't seen this before Daniel Lemire sent me an email, but there's still plenty of time to get your submissions in - the deadline is October 31, 2005. Basically, the question is whether Canada's Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council should institute a process of open archiving, or as the email says, "Should SSHRC adopt a regulation requiring that one copy of all research results be deposited in an institutional repository? Should such a regulation apply to all forms of research outputs". More...

Alt-I-Lab 2005 Demonstrators

By Stephen Downes - Stephen's Web. Sam Easterby-Smith: Alt-I-Lab 2005 Demonstrators, CETIS September 2, 2005

Scott Leslie summarizes: "While this writeup does put some more meat on the bone and help us understand more about Learning Design, Tools Interoperability Profile and repository interoperability, I can't help but think that recording some of these sessions (and maybe some screen recorded demos too) would be helpful for spreading the word and illustrating the concepts to a wider audience". The Real TAFE Homepage

By Stephen Downes - Stephen's Web. Leigh Blackall: The Real TAFE Homepage, Teach and Learn Online September 2, 2005

Leigh Blackall has a happy discovery while giving a presentation at TAFE NSW Illawarra. "I came across the usual things that make TAFE a bit of a joke... access denials, not being set up to play MPEG4 movies, and other stuff I can't really recall just now, but then the joke turned on me! It was when I was up to the bit about wikis - using wikipedia, wikiversity, and the South African Curriculum wiki as examples". More...
