Welcoming foreign universities: is it a good deal for Indonesians?

The ConversationScholars say that establishing foreign universities in Indonesia can provide quality education at home while also opening more avenues for international research. However, initiatives must be put in place to make sure they are accessible to all Indonesians.
Talk of “globalising” Indonesia’s higher education has resurfaced this year, including the prospects of opening up international branch campuses. More...

In a Globalised World, Mediocre Teaching is Doomed

By Stephen Downes - Stephen's Web. Peter Wood[Edit][Delete]: In a Globalised World, Mediocre Teaching is Doomed, Mercator Net [Edit][Delete] July 26, 2006
Why, you ask? "In the United States, more and more families are opting out of public schools for home schooling, private schools, and charter schools. Parents are ambitious for their children and don't want to jeopardise their futures by giving them intellectually impoverished educations." Of course, this doesn't eliminate mediocre teaching, it merely ensures that rich people will not have to suffer it. And who is at fault here? The unions, of course. Sheesh. George Siemens linked to this today. In any case, the entire premise is wrong. The rich will get personalized service, as they always do, and pay way too much for it. As for the rest of us plebes, online technologies will greatly reduce the gap, allowing even mediocre teaching to be more than enough to suffice. More...

Reviewing the top-10 Ed-Tech Stories of 2005

By Stephen Downes - Stephen's Web. Christian Long[Edit][Delete]: Reviewing the top-10 Ed-Tech Stories of 2005, think:lab [Edit][Delete] January 6, 2006

Christian Long summarizes, in a much more accessible form, the list of top 10 stories from last year, as seen by eSchool News. Their point of view is rather different from my own - they highlight, in my view, events rather than trends, appearances rather than underlying reality. Sure, Katrina was a big story (so was the tsunami recovery, but it didn't make the list), but it would have been more approriate to talk about the changing environment and its impact on schools generally. Or "globalization drives U.S. school reform efforts." Globaization isn't a unidimensional thing: sure, it's the weaving of the global information matrix (the red pill) but it's also the increasing corporatization of governance and finance (the blue pill). Four Struggles

By Stephen Downes - Stephen's Web. Four Struggles
This is a guest presentation to a political science class at St. Thomas University in Fredericton. I look at an introductory and fairly typical chapter on globalization and outsourcing, and then argue that changes in political and economic organization run counter to the model proposed. In particular, the development of a network-based society runs against the model of corporate structures described. This all is set within a context of 'four struggles' that have shaped political and other conflict through history and today. Presentation by Stephen Downes, St. Thomas University, Fredericton, NB, [Link]. More...

Mondialisation, diversité et besoins particuliers
Presentation (in French) to the International Open Forum on E-Learning and Standards introducing the topic of globalization, diversity and special needs. The goal of globalization, notes the author, is to foster global commerce, to minimize tariff and non-tariff trade barriers, and to maximinze freedom of trade (a lot like standards, notice). More...
