Towards a theory or model of productivity for online learning: outcomes, scale and design

http://www.tonybates.ca/wp-content/themes/education/images/bg.pngBy . In the HEQCO report and in his blog posts, Tom Carey raised the important issue of what part of online teaching can be scaled, and what cannot.
Outcomes and scale
I want to address this question in terms of what outcomes we are trying to achieve in education, because scaling must relate to what we are trying to do. For instance, it is quite possible to scale content delivery – this has been done since the early days of print and more recently radio and television. As Internet and mobile access becomes almost universal, the Internet can also deliver content at scale – this is what MOOCs do so well.
However, most educators at least would agree that education is more than just the delivery of information. There are lots of different ways to define learning outcomes, and at differing levels of detail, but I’ll start by quoting the following from Max Blouw, the President of Wilfred Laurier University, and Chair of the Council of Ontario Universities, in today’s Globe and Mail.

http://blog.educpros.fr/christine-vaufrey/wp-content/themes/longbeach_christine-vaufrey/images/img01.jpgPar Christine Vaufrey.

NYTimes.com Down, Higher Ed and Online Learning

http://www.insidehighered.com/sites/default/server_files/styles/blog_landing/public/technology_and_learning_blog_header.jpg?itok=aQthgJ91By Joshua Kim. As I type these words at 7:20pm EST on 8/27/13 two things are happening on other windows on my laptop.
1.  The NYTimes.com website is down.
2.  Students at my institution are learning in live online classes (on Adobe Connect) and asynchronously on our LMS (Blackboard).
According to a number of articles linked to Google News the cause of the NYTimes.com outage is hacking.
"NY Times Suspects Hackers in Latest Website Crash USA Today
"New York Times Website Believed to be Hacked" the Chicago Tribune.
The NYTimes.com also went dark on August 14th. This was apparently an internal technical issue, not the result of an attack. Read more...

Running Synchronous Online Classes

http://www.insidehighered.com/sites/default/server_files/styles/blog_landing/public/technology_and_learning_blog_header.jpg?itok=aQthgJ91By Joshua Kim. What synchronous online class meeting platform do you use?
My days are spent in Adobe Connect, as we have a requirement for up to 30 simultaneous webcam feeds (we call it the Brady Bunch effect).
From what I have been able to learn, Adobe Connect is still the only platform that can scale to 30 plus simultaneous webcams (am I wrong?). I am a believer in a class seeing all seeing each other during a live meeting - as seeing each face live adds to a sense of intimacy and connection. Read more...

Open University student finishes epic bike ride

http://www.timeshighereducation.co.uk/magazine/graphics/logo.pngBy . For some, studying towards a maths degree might feel as challenging as a 22,000-mile bike ride. But one Open University student has combined the two, completing a mammoth cycle around Europe with his laptop and an e-reader in his pocket, allowing him to keep up with his studies.
Stephen Primrose-Smith, who has been studying for a BSc in mathematics and a diploma in physical sciences, set off on his epic journey two years ago. More...
