The company did not disclose the stock’s IPO price. The quick fix for online education: Make instructors binge on TED talks

In a 2010 talk, TED curator Chris Anderson describes the concept of “crowd-accelerated innovation”—a self-fueling cycle of learning which has accelerated through the ubiquity of web-based video. In Anderson’s view, this mechanism of iteration and immediate feedback has made the Ted Talk and many other iterative processes evolve in dramatic ways. Anderson explains that part of the reason TED evolved so quickly is that you had some of the best and most creative individuals in the world prepare extensively for their talk by watching their predecessors. Through this iterative process, the presentations consistently improve—if only out of fear of disappointing their audience. S’adapter aux évolutions de la société de l’information
Le Master 2 CEID (Contrôle, exploitation et intelligence des données) de l'Université Paris Ouest Nanterre, propose trois options qui permettent d’organiser les compétences des décideurs de demain autour des besoins qui s’expriment aujourd’hui :
- la protection des données, avec l’option Correspondant Informatique et Libertés (CIL)
- la conception de dispositifs d’animation des données, avec l’option Manager de la Connaissance et de la Formation En Ligne,
- la démocratisation de l’accès aux données, avec l’option Chef de projet de développement numérique territorial.

What’s an Online Student?
By Matt Reed. In a discussion recently about the demographics of our online students, I realized that I’m not entirely sure what an online student is. We have students in each of the following groups:
- Students who take nothing but entirely online classes
- Students who take most classes online, but who come to campus for a few
- Students who take most of their classes on campus, but who regularly take one or two classes online to make their schedules cleaner
- Students who take “hybrid” classes (also called “brick and click” or “surf and turf”) in which some of the regular class meetings are held (or replaced by other activities) online
- Students who take traditional classes that have fairly robust online materials, and who have to work with/through our LMS in the course of what they’re doing. Read more...

Moodle for the Masses

Moodle edges out competitors such as Blackboard among smaller colleges, a new analysis of the learning management systems shows, lending some evidence to the anecdotal popularity of open-source solutions among those institutions. The analysis, published by the former Blackboard engineer George Kroner on his Edutechnica blog, shows familiar players such as Blackboard, Desire2Learn and Instructure are major forces in the market among institutions with 1,000 to 2,000 full-time students. New eLearning paper on Learning Analytics and Assessment
Targeted at various stakeholders, the eLearning papers that you can now find on the new Open Education Europa portal stimulate reflection on open educational resources and in general new technologies and education in Europe. The latest eLearning Papers item discuss how Learning Analytics uses the learners’ digital trail to gain a better understanding of and improve the learning process. The articles propose a teacher-led design inquiry of learning and expose the benefits of combining learning analytics and open linked data research. The Papers also propose four case studies introducing assessment in basic maths, concept mapping for reflection, an analysis of the teachers’ learning process and real-time visualisation of discussion activities in a MOOC.
