The High Cost of Research

BloggerBy . In response to state budget cuts for higher education and new laws regulating the selling of academic patents, universities since 1980 have increased their spending on research.  Although many people believe that research brings extra revenue to these institutions, a recent study reveals how research activities rarely cover their true costs. In Understandingthe high Cost of Success in University Research,"Karen Holbrook and Paul Sanberg show how in the case of two university systems, “the findings demonstrated that 40 cents was spent from university funds for each one dollar of external funding received.” If we apply this same math to the University of California’s research budget of $5.2 billion, we can assume that UC had to find an additional $2 billion from other sources to make up for the additional costs. The struggle to pay for university

http://bathknightblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/telegraph-logo.jpgBy Boarding School Beak. No wonder some would-be students are put off going to university when parents, like me, are struggling to meet the costs, says Boarding School Beak.
For anyone lucky enough to have enjoyed a free university education, it’s well-nigh impossible to grasp the fact that the state now contributes absolutely nothing towards the costs. This struck me forcefully, clearing out some old university notes. Tucked away in their midst, was a letter from the London Borough which kindly footed the bill for my maintenance grant, over thirty years ago. This letter apologised for a “shortfall” in funding and offered to make up the difference “as soon as possible”.
The reason? They hadn’t paid my rail fares, or “excess travel allowance” from home in London, to university. The sum they were sending me amounted to several hundred pounds, even then. More...

Higher cost no guarantee of higher education quality

http://enews.ksu.edu.sa/wp-content/uploads/2011/10/UWN.jpgBy Nic Mitchell. The former education advisor to Tony Blair's Labour administration told an international higher education conference in London that higher prices for a university degree should not be seen as any guarantee that students were getting better quality education.
Sir Michael Barber, co-author of the far-reaching report An Avalanche is Coming: Higher education and the revolution ahead, was speaking at the opening of a conference on “The International Higher Education Revolution: Impacts on mobility, qualifications, networks”, staged in London by The Observatory on Borderless Higher Education, or OBHE, from 11-12 December. World-Herald Editorial: College costs pose a challenge

New numbers about college costs and student debt provide a sobering reminder of the importance of planning for college and informing students about the realities of those costs. The numbers also provide a caution for college leaders to redouble efforts to hold down costs. The average student debt of a graduating college senior in 2008 was $23,450, the Institute for College Access & Success says in a new report that looks at public and private nonprofit four-year institutions. By 2012 the average debt load for new grads had climbed to $29,400. More...

Costs in Croatia

http://www.insidehighered.com/sites/all/themes/ihecustom/logo.jpgBy Cyrille Cartier for Times Higher Education. In a town near the Croatian border with Bosnia, Marija Čačić saw many family members and friends lose their jobs as local industries shut down. She came to the University of Zagreb’s philosophy department eager to lay foundations for a better life, far away from those local problems. But all that changed when Čačić joined the student movement and saw the connection between the jobless workers back home and her own struggle for “free education.” Read more...

2 Youngest US Senators to Introduce Legislation to Lower College Costs

DiverseBy Dave Collins. The two youngest members of the U.S. Senate are co-sponsoring a bill aimed at lowering college costs that includes withholding federal funds from schools that don’t meet affordability and quality standards.
Democratic Sens. Chris Murphy of Connecticut and Brian Schatz of Hawaii are planning to introduce the legislation this week. The two are still paying off their college loans.
Murphy says higher education is out of reach for many Americans because of skyrocketing tuition. He says too many students are leaving college with heavy debt. More...

Out-of-Pocket Costs in Most of Higher Education Rising

http://www.insidehighered.com/sites/all/themes/ihecustom/logo.jpgStudents during the 2011-12 academic year paid, on average, higher immediate out-of-pocket costs to attend public and private colleges than their counterparts in 2007-8, according to a new federal report released Tuesday. The average out-of-pocket net price -- a college’s sticker price minus all forms of financial aid -- increased by $800 at both private not-for-profit and public four-year universities, after adjusting for inflation. At community colleges, the same figure rose by $400. Read more...

Insurance costs rising for coastal colleges

http://www.universitybusiness.com/sites/default/files/UBTech_leadership.jpgBy Kylie Lacey. Premiums will increase by 25 percent each year until the “full risk rate” is reached. An ocean view may make campus tours scenic, but when it comes to flood insurance, coastal institutions will soon face a deluge of bills. Flood insurance subsidies for colleges and universities located in federally-designated flood zones ended on Oct. 1, when the Biggert Waters Act went into effect. More...
