Cedefop conference: time for action on work-based learning

http://www.cedefop.europa.eu/EN/Images-ContentManagement/BMj2Z-mCIAAJBVY_rdax_167x125.jpgParticipants in Cedefop’s conference on tackling skills mismatch agreed that Europe needs to implement policy initiatives on developing work-based learning as an answer to rising youth unemployment.
High-level participants in the two-day conference included European Union Commissioner for Education, Culture, Multilingualism and Youth Androulla Vassiliou, German Parliamentary Secretary of State, Federal Ministry of Education and Research, Thomas Rachel and Thessaloniki Mayor Yiannis Boutaris.
The event gathered more than 150 experts on vocational education and training from around the world, policy-makers from the European Commission and Member States as well as social partners’ representatives. In her keynote speech, Ms Vassiliou argued that the risk of a lost generation is ‘a real threat’ but added that ‘at EU-level we are working with the Member States to put Europe back on the road to jobs and growth’.
The Commissioner referred to the upcoming launch of a European Alliance for Apprenticeships as something to be ‘proud of’ and stressed that ‘it will be only by pooling the efforts of EU Member States, social partners, business, other relevant actors and the European Commission that we will be able to develop high-quality apprenticeships across Europe’.
Thomas Rachel told the conference that ‘the dual system is the backbone of Germany’s economic success’ and that his country wants to support its European partners ‘in their reform process’.
In his address, Thessaloniki Mayor Yiannis Boutaris highlighted the importance of vocational education and training, especially in countries like Greece, pointing out that ‘the reform should have started before the crisis’.
Cedefop Acting Director Christian Lettmayr said in the conference’s closing statement: ‘There may be limits to growth but there are no limits to change.’

HEA Annual Conference

http://www.heacademy.ac.uk/assets/sites/hea1/pages/annual-conference-2011.jpgHEA Annual Conference, 3-4 July 2013, The University of Warwick - Powerful partnerships: defining the learning experience.
Conference Park - Warwick Conferences, The University of Warwick, Gibbett Hill Road, Coventry. Bookings now open. Provisional programme now available.
Building on last year’s successful conference, which examined the transformational change in HE, this year the 9th Annual Conference of the Higher Education Academy, Powerful partnerships: defining the learning experience, will explore the increasing use of partnerships to address the challenges presented by change. In this uncertain environment, higher education is investing in partnerships, both within the UK and internationally, to develop new avenues and markets, drawing on the vibrancy and unique strengths of each partner.
These partnerships are multifaceted and we address this at the conference within three strands: students; employers; and organisations as partners. This conference will develop our understanding of how such partnerships affect the student experience and educational outcome, and also benefit society as a whole. While recognising the competitive environment, the conference will discuss and dismantle issues around partnerships to discover how to sustain success through partnerships.

IEASA Conference 2013

http://t0.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcTU0CI8TMjUFC-BO7WHk2kBVBnIvw_t6nfSX64BjFdK-ERYqzGuFnKgKAInternationalisation in a Changing World: Higher Education’s Response
Higher Education shares global expectations and challenges. Notable expectations are the contribution higher education (in particular research) can make towards the knowledge economy (especially after the global financial crisis), sustainable development (contributions to the green economy and environment), values and norms (a global ethic), democracy (combating human rights violations), the relevance of the curriculum (higher education is a social good), partnership development and service (the contribution universities, business/industry and government can make towards the promotion of social communities).
Higher education is also sharing common challenges. There is a general concern about the increase of public expenditure and the rapid growth of the student body in recent decades. This resulted in global discussions on what public universities are doing and how well they are doing it. Developments such as academic mobility lead to a growing need to understand the equivalence of qualifications, standards and credits. Hence more attention is being paid to quality assurance systems, funding and finance to steer the higher education system to meet the agenda of the developmental state and the rapid growth of technology.
The emerging question is whether higher education is responding effectively to internationalisation challenges and developments. The importance of this question is challenged by universities’ core mission statements (teaching/learning, research and engagement) and if these statements can keep pace with the on-going challenges of a changing world.
