Classement THE: les facultés françaises restent méconnues à l'étranger

Top 400 Universities

The Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2012-2013 powered by Thomson Reuters are the only global university performance tables to judge world class universities across all of their core missions - teaching, research, knowledge transfer and international outlook. The top universities rankings employ 13 carefully calibrated performance indicators to provide the most comprehensive and balanced comparisons available, which are trusted by students, academics, university leaders, industry and governments.

The Times Higher Education World Reputation Rankings employ the world's largest invitation-only academic opinion survey to provide the definitive list of the top 100 most powerful global university brands.
A spin-off of the annual World University Rankings, the reputation league table is based on nothing more than subjective judgement - but it is the considered expert judgement of senior, published academics - the people best placed to know the most about excellence in our universities.

The Times Higher Education 100 Under 50 is a ranking of the top 100 universities under 50 years old. It provides a glimpse into the future, showcasing not those institutions with centuries of history, but the rising stars which show great potential. The table employs the same 13 separate indicators as the World University Rankings, but the methodology has been carefully re-calibrated to reflect the special characteristics of younger universities, giving less weight to subjective indicators of academic reputation. The 2013 100 Under 50 will be published in June 2013.

Reputation rankings show 'super-brands' escaping chasing pack

http://www.timeshighereducation.co.uk/magazine/graphics/mastheads/mast_blank.gifBy Jack Grove. Harvard University heads a group of six "super-brands" which have pulled away from the chasing pack in terms of reputation and prestige, according to the tables published on 4 March.
Massachusetts Institute of Technology is the second highest in the list of top 100 university brands followed by the University of Cambridge, the University of Oxford, the University of California, Berkeley and Stanford University.
Australia is the major success story of the 2013 rankings, with an extra two representatives in the world top 100 - the University of New South Wales and Monash University.
Its four other universities in the top 100 also improved their standings, with the University of Melbourne highest ranked at number 39.
The UK had nine institutions in the top 100 - the universities of Cambridge, Oxford, Imperial College London, University College London, the London School of Economics, Edinburgh, Manchester, King's College London, Bristol - three fewer than the inaugural 2011 rankings.
Germany, Japan and the Netherlands each has five universities in the top 100, France has four institutions and Canada, Hong Kong and Sweden three apiece.
Compiled by Thomson Reuters, the ranking is based on responses from around 16,300 leading peer-reviewed academics from across the world who were asked to nominate no more than 15 of the best institutions in their field of expertise. Thirty-nine per cent of responses were from the Americas, 26 per cent from Europe, 25 per cent from Asia Pacific and 12 per cent from the Middle East, North Africa and Central Asia. Read more...

On Journal Rankings in a Nonsleazy Sense - Part 1

At various times throughout my graduate student and now junior faculty career, I have run into the phenomenon of journal rankings. My field is English studies, so I know that for many of  you out there in the social sciences and especially any readers in the hard sciences may be laughing at my naivete on this issue. But in my experience, most folks in the humanities fields aren't as conscious of journal rankings in a technical sense. Oh sure, most of us know that PMLA or Critical Inquiry have much higher visibility than other, more specialized journals, but I've recently decided to familiarize myself with the finer points of journal rankings in an attempt to better understand my field. Welcome to U-Multirank

http://www.umultirank.org/fileadmin/_processed_/csm_lll_d9e50e3c2f.pngWelcome to U-Multirank - the multidimensional ranking of higher education institutions
Recruitment of institutions has started
The first U-Multirank edition in 2014 will cover a minimum of 500 higher education institutions from around the world. The recruitment of institutions has started now. Higher education institutions interested in participating can register their interest now. In the coming weeks various international higher education associations from all over the world will begin to participate in the recruitment process. Additional information about the project, participation and the benefits of participating can be found in the “Key questions and answers”. Higher education institutions interested in participating are kindly invited to submit the contact form. Register your university’s interest.
The Project
U-Multirank is a new multidimensional, user-driven approach to international ranking of higher education institutions. The dimensions it includes are teaching and learning, research, knowledge transfer, international orientation and regional engagement. Based on empirical data U-Multirank will compare institutions with similar institutional profiles and allow users to develop personalised rankings by selecting indicators in terms of their own preferences.Based on the results of a feasibility study the European Commission is currently funding a project to implement U-Multirank.
A first ranking will be published in early 2014 covering at least 500 higher education institutions from Europe and beyond. It will provide an institutional ranking of whole institutions as well as field-based rankings for engineering, business and physics. After 2014 the coverage of institutions and fields will be extended progressively.
This project is funded by the European Commission. This publication content reflects the views only of the authors. The European Commission cannot be held responsible for any use which may be made of the information contained therein.

Universities pull out of EU's 'unjustifiable' U-Multirank

Click here for THE homepageBy Jack Grove. A group representing some of Europe's leading universities has withdrawn its support for a new ranking system funded by the European Union, warning that it could pose "a serious threat" to higher education. The League of European Research Universities, which represents 21 leading research-intensive universities, has disassociated itself from the U-Multirank project, which is due to publish its first results in early 2014. At a cost of EUR2 million (£1.7 million), the scheme aims to offer an alternative to ranking systems that are focused mainly on research excellence and will grade universities in five areas - research, teaching, internationalisation, knowledge transfer and contribution to regional growth. Ranking Colleges by ‘Desirability’

http://chronicle.com/img/photos/biz/icons/headcount-newnameplate.gifBy Eric Hoover. This weary planet might not need yet another set of college rankings, but new models keep popping up. The latest is a rating of colleges based on their “desirability,” as determined by the choices applicants make.
In a new paper published by The Quarterly Journal of Economics, four researchers propose a method of ranking colleges according to students’ “revealed preferences”—the institutions they choose to attend over others that have accepted them. Using survey data from a national sample of high-achieving students, the researchers determined the winners and losers of each applicant’s “matriculation tournament.” They then used those outcomes to rank about 100 selective colleges. Harvard University topped the list, but you already knew that; the University of Notre Dame nearly cracked the top 10. Read more...

U-Multirank, a new university ranking system launched

AuditU-Multirank, a new university ranking system was launched under the Irish EU Presidency in Dublin by Ruairí Quinn, TD, Minister for Education and Skills and European Commissioner Androulla Vassiliou.
U-Multirank will measure the performance and excellence of HEIs across a variety of dimensions.  Five areas are measured: reputation for research, quality of teaching and learning, international orientation, success in knowledge transfer (such as partnerships with business and start-ups), and contribution to regional growth. Some 500 universities are expected to sign up to take part, with the first rankings results expected in early 2014.
Three organizations, members of IREG Observatory will work on U-Multirank: CHE Centre for Higher Education (Germany) the lead of the of the project together with Center for Higher Education Policy Studies (CHEPS), Observatoire des Sciences et des Techniques - OST (France), Fundación CYD (Spain) and Perspektywy Education Foundation (Poland).
Androulla Vassiliou, European Commissioner for Education, Culture, Multilingualism and Youth said in Dublin: "The new ranking proposed by the European Commission will, above all, enable young people to make better informed decisions about where to study; it will also allow universities to compare themselves in a more transparent and useful way. The new listing will differ from existing international rankings by rating universities according to a broad range of performance factors, which will provide a more accurate, comparable and user-friendly guide to university quality. As well as its added value for students and universities, I believe the new ranking will be an indispensable tool for political decision makers, in the context of our joint efforts at EU level to encourage the much-needed modernisation of higher education institutions,” More...
