Intelligence and Influence: On Education Ranking Systems

https://s3.amazonaws.com/hackedu/audreywatters_75.jpgBy . Ideology and Ranking
But even if we did know the algorithm that drives the Klout score, I’d still want to ask questions about the meaning of the measurement and the weight that the number – any ranking system, really – carries. Why, if nothing else, are we so obsessed with ranking?
What purposes does Klout serve? Whose purposes does Klout serve? Why is Michael Petrilli or Forbes or Rick Hess or any of the other popular list-makers interested in a ranking or rating system for those in education?

CWUR 2014 Edition is out now

The Center for World University Rankings (CWUR) publishes the only global university ranking that measures the quality of education and training of students as well as the prestige of the faculty members and the quality of their research without relying on surveys and university data submissions.
CWUR uses eight objective and robust indicators to rank the world's top 1000 universities:

1) Quality of Education, measured by the number of a university's alumni who have won major international awards, prizes, and medals relative to the university's size [25%]
2) Alumni Employment, measured by the number of a university's alumni who currently hold CEO positions at the world's top companies relative to the university's size [25%]
3) Quality of Faculty, measured by the number of academics who have won major international awards, prizes, and medals [25%]
4) Publications, measured by the number of research papers appearing in reputable journals [5%]
5) Influence, measured by the number of research papers appearing in highly-influential journals [5%]
6) Citations, measured by the number of highly-cited research papers [5%]
7) Broad Impact, measured by the university's h-Index [5%]
8) Patents, measured by the number of international patent filings [5%]

In addition to providing consultation for governments and universities, the Center for World University Rankings aims to provide the most comprehensive university rankings available, which are trusted by students, academics, university administrators, and government officials from around the world.

Exploring the Ins and Outs of the Proposed Ratings System

The EvoLLLutionBy  - EvoLLLution. 1. As a starting point, what would be the biggest advantages of having a college rating system?
It seems to me that some of the other popular media ranking systems —  while probably originally intended to create an additional demand and market for the print medium magazine — have had an unintended consequence of incenting institutions to do the wrong thing. More...

‘Money’ Reaches for Objectivity in College Rankings

http://chronicle.com/img/photos/biz/headcount-45.pngBy Eric HooverMoney magazine unveiled a new set of college rankings on Monday morning, touting its list as a tool for identifying institutions that deliver “great value.”
In a world full of frivolous rankings (colleges with the best weather!), Money set out to compile a highly objective one. The result is relatively heavy on outcomes data and light on subjective prestigery like the reputation surveys used by U.S. News & World Report. To develop the rankings, Money joined with Mark S. Schneider, a vice president at the American Institutes for Research and a former commissioner of the Department of Education’s National Center for Education Statistics. More...

Why university research rankings miss the bigger picture

Go to the Globe and Mail homepageBy Feridun Hamdullahpur. Buzzfeed, the Internet phenomenon that journalists and marketers around the world are seeking to replicate at breakneck speed, taps in to our human instinct to try to bring order to the things around us with entertaining nonsense. (Anyway, they got it wrong – the top album kids need to hear before high school is Blind Faith’s Blind Faith.).
This obsession with lists isn’t new. People love lists. Not even The Globe is immune (Four kinds of insurance you don’t need). More...

India State to Start Rating Universities

http://www.ireg-observatory.org/templates/sub_business2/images/ireg_top2013.pngThere has been considerable interest in global university rankings in India recently, particularly the BRICS (Brazil, Russia, China, India, South Africa) rankings by Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) and the BRICS Plus Emerging Economies rankings by Times Higher Education (THE). There have been concerns that the performance of Indian universities has failed to match that of the National University of Singapore.

The ranking tries to answer two important questions future students and their parents more often ask: how much will it cost to study and how much will a diploma be worth in the job market.
