College Rankings: What's the Use?

By . Which is better: Harvard or Yale?
To answer this question, one might be tempted to refer to the U.S. News & World Report "Best Colleges" ranking. The perennial list arguably is the most popular among the sundry publications ranking America's colleges and universities. It does make for seductive reading. A single publication can help students and parents can make key decisions about their futures in higher education. To be sure, the pitfalls are many. More...

Editor to Give Up Leadership of Philosophy Rankings

HomeThe University of Chicago's Brian Leiter has announced that, after 2014-15, he is giving up the editorship of The Philosophical Gourmet Report, a rankings system he created for philosophy departments. Leiter has come under fire for his exchanges with some philosophers (which he has defended as frank, but which critics say have crossed a line to rude and demeaning). Many philosophers have pledged not to participate in the ratings if Leiter continues to run them. Read more...

The THE World University Rankings 2014-15; Positive News for East Asia, Australia and Turkey

http://www.ireg-observatory.org/templates/sub_business2/images/ireg_top2013.pngAt the top there were few surprises. The California Institute of Technology  (Caltech) remains in first place followed by Harvard, Oxford, Stanford and Cambridge (up from seventh place last year) while Yale has joined Imperial College London in ninth place, pushing Chicago out of the top ten.
In general, Asian universities have continued to make steady progress, while European and North American institutions have slipped, with some such as the University of Illinois at Chicago and the University of Texas at Dallas falling out of the top 200 altogether. In contrast, Australian universities have continued to improve.
One interesting aspect of the latest rankings is the rise of Turkish universities. The Middle East Technical University is now in 85th place, up from 223rd last year, Bogazici University 139th    (199th in 2013), Istanbul Technical University 165th (212th in 2013), Sabanci University 182nd, and Bilkent University in the 201- 225 band (201 -225 band in 2013).  This was due in large part to improvements in the scores for citations, which measure global research influence.

LinkedIn University Rankings

By Stephen Downes - Stephen's Web. LinkedIn University Rankings
Various authors, LinkedIn, 2014/10/03
This has to be better than the made-up rankings provided by entities like U.S. News & World Report, or Macleans in Canada, but even so the purpose remains the same: the rankings reflect the values held by the ranker, and are intended to push the rankees into pursuing those metrics (hence, the U.S. News rankings, for example, push universities away from opening access to lower income students). Just so, the LinkedIn rankings are "based on career outcomes". The LinkedIn blog defines outcomes based on "desirable jobs," for examples, where "we define a desirable job to be a job at a desirable company for the relevant profession. More...

SPIEGEL ONLINEVon .
