Panel working on a ranking framework

By Gauri Kohli. The human resource development ministry has proposed the formation of a committee that will work on developing a framework for India-specific rankings. “Indian universities (and colleges) will be ranked in comparison with peer universities/colleges. Foreign universities/colleges will be included in this. The parameters and factors will be selected based on what is relevant for bachelor’s and master’s programmes, research programmes, and for different disciplines such as sciences, engineering, medicine, law, liberal arts, fine arts, etc. The Indian ranking system is proposed to be ready by next academic year,” says Professor Bhaskar Ramamurthi, director, IIT Madras. NTU (National Taiwan University) - Performance Ranking of Scientific - Dix-neuf Universités françaises classées

BannerThe “Performance Ranking of Scientific Papers for World Universities” is released by National Taiwan University, and is also known as the NTU Ranking. The NTU Ranking provides overall ranking, ranking by six fields, and ranking by 14 selected subjects.
This performance ranking was first published in 2007 by the Higher Education Evaluation and Accreditation Council of Taiwan (HEEACT), which makes annual announcements on the top 500 universities.
This ranking system evaluates the performance of scientific papers, and the indicators are designed to compare both the quality and quantity of scientific papers from each university. Aucune université française classée dans les cent premières de l'Alternative Ranking (Excluding Award Factor)

Academic Ranking of World UniversitiesThe Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU) is the first global ranking of universities and has been distinguished from other global rankings for its consistent and rigorous methodology. Only substantial progress in academic excellence can help universities to climb up on the list. ARWU uses six objective indicators, among them the number of alumni winning Nobel Prizes and Fields Medals and the number of staff winning Nobel Prizes and Fields Medals are seen as the most difficult one, even the best universities in the world cannot be sure whether next year’s winners will be their alumni or staff. It is because of this reason, ARWU takes a century’s performance into account during the calculation of these two indicators in order to avoid the fluctuations in a short time window.

Alternative Shanghai Rankings: Asia gains, Germany and France lose

http://www.ireg-observatory.org/templates/sub_business2/images/ireg_top2013.pngMany observers have noticed that some universities enjoy a big advantage in the Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU), better known as the Shanghai rankings, because of Fields Medals in mathematics and Nobel prizes in three sciences and economics. Now, the Center for World-Class Universities at Shanghai Jiao Tong University has produced an Alternate Ranking from which the Awards and Alumni indicators have been deleted.
A little further down, Oxford, which has strengths in the arts and humanities, rises from 9th to 6th place while Cambridge, noted for research in the natural sciences, falls from 5th to 8th.
Among the universities that suffer disproportionately from the exclusion of the Nobel and Fields awards are Princeton, Moscow Lomonosov State University and University of Paris Sud (Paris 11). Several other continental European universities and Ivy League schools also lose out.

Taiwan Rankings Confirm US Dominance

http://www.ireg-observatory.org/templates/sub_business2/images/ireg_top2013.pngThe Performance Ranking of Scientific Papers was originally published by the Higher Education Evaluation and Accreditation Council of Taiwan in 2007. Since 2012 it has been published by the National Taiwan University and is also known as the Taiwan Tanking.
It is a research-based ranking with indicators measuring number of articles, number of citations, h-index, highly cited papers and articles in high impact journals. The methodology tends to favour larger institutions and it is possible to click to a reference ranking of universities scaled according to the number of academic staff. The University of Toronto, for example, falls from fourth to tenth place.
Overall, these rankings show the continued domination of English-speaking universities, especially American ones, in the world of research. There are 45 American, eight British, five Canadian, four Australian and one Singaporean university in the top 100.

EUA consults members on U-Multirank and open access

LogoIn September EUA wrote to its individual member universities inviting them to take part in an online consultation on two topics: the multidimensional ranking U-Multirank and open access to research publications. The aim of this consultation is to gather universities’ views and experiences on these two topics in order to further inform EUA’s policy work in these two important areas for universities.
As this is an “institutional questionnaire”, only one response per institution will be accepted. EUA encourages all members to take part in the survey that will be open until 31 October 2014.
