Another Day, Another EdTech Giant Acquired

Another Day, Another EdTech Giant Acquired
Rip Empson, TechCrunch, March 19, 2014

There's some churn in the background in the education technology industry as last week Renaissance Learning was acquired by a private equity firm for about a billion, and this week Skillsoft was acquired by another priovate equity firm for $2 billion. More...

Nuevo servicio de Google Meet Oppia bloqueado para Cuba

Nuevo servicio de Google Meet Oppia bloqueado para Cuba
Raidell Avello Martínez, Tú puedes usar las TIC, March 3, 2014

So it looks like Oppia, which I mentioned last week, doesn't exactly allow anyone to create a new interactive learning experience. In particular, it doesn't allow people in Cuba to do this (nor probably in a few other countries, notably Iran, Syria and Sudan). More...

Meet Oppia, Google’s New Open Source Project That Allows Anyone To Create An Interactive Learning Experience

Meet Oppia, Google’s New Open Source Project That Allows Anyone To Create An Interactive Learning Experience
Rip Emerson, TechCrunch, March 2, 2014
The whole story is in the title (which is a nice contrast from those Ipworthy headlines). More, you have to like Google's approach here: "No trial periods, no freemium plans, no advertisements. Writing, editing, or learning from explorations on oppia.org is 100% free of charge! Additionally, all lessons on oppia.org are licensed CC-BY-SA, which means that you are allowed to copy, modify, and reuse lesson content. Want to host an Oppia instance yourself, or make modifications to it? The code behind oppia.org is licensed under the Apache License 2.0. You are encouraged to download, modify, and reuse Oppia's software to your heart's content!" OK, the lessons created by Oppia are really basic (I tried a bunch of them). More...

Discussion and analysis of Microsoft's retreat from Passport, covered here yesterday. The author suggests that a major beneficiary will be the Liberty Alliance, a consortium of 150 companies providing federated identity management. Maybe. More...

Googlizers vs. Resistors

Googlizers vs. Resistors
In a world where tomorrow is different from yesterday, controlled vocabularies and not only inefficient, they're dangerous. In a controlled vocabulary, not only can you not classify 'podcasting', you cannot even register its impact. Some librarians are getting this message. Others are not. More...

ACS Takes Legal Action Against Google

ACS Takes Legal Action Against Google
For crying out loud... The American Chemical Society (ACS) has filed a complaint against Google in a U.S. District Court over Google’s use of the 'Scholar' in Google Scholar. The what over what. More...

Google Scholar Beta

Google Scholar Beta
The subject line in the email read "Google Scholar roasted by Péter Jacsó" - and this is an understatement. What follows is as thorough a baking, broiling, slicing and dicing of a website as I have seen. The author makes his points, though, and has done his research, delving through the collection using undocumented search features to reveal, among many other things, that Google Scholar, while it claims to index Blackwell, lists only ten percent of the publishers 437,451 records in 755 journals. More...

Google Scholar and OpenURL Firefox Extension

Google Scholar and OpenURL Firefox Extension
I have mixed feelings about this one. What we have is a nifty Firefox extension that works hand in hand with Google Scholar by checking to see whether your institution has a subscription to the Jorunal in question and giving you immediate access to the article. Neat. But do we really want to be helping entrench the subscription based model of publishing like this. More...
