Wikipedia Founder Discourages Academic Use of His Creation

By Stephen Downes - Stephen's Web. Unattributed[Edit][Delete]: Wikipedia Founder Discourages Academic Use of His Creation, Chronicle of Higher Education [Edit][Delete] June 14, 2006
While technically true, this Chronicle headline is very misleading. Wales actually says, "For God sake, you're in college; don't cite the encyclopedia." Which of course could apply equally well to Britannica. And it calls to mind my own academic background, where (somewhere in grade 8, I think) I was told not to quote the encyclopedia, but to use it to find primary sources. Of course, my teachers were referring to World Book, one of my favorite reads at the time. So, yeah, don't cite the encyclopedia. More...

How can business meet its responsibility to address climate change?

It is widely recognised that climate change is the most serious threat facing humanity, and that urgent action is needed to limit greenhouse gas emissions and address climate-related risks. With business responsible for the large majority of emissions – only 100 companies produce over 70% of greenhouse emissions – business holds the primary responsibility for taking action to limit and address their impacts on climate (and not just the impacts of climate on them). 7 Things You Should Know About Google Jockeying

By Stephen Downes - Stephen's Web. The EDUCAUSE Learning Initiative[Edit][Delete]: 7 Things You Should Know About Google Jockeying, Educause [Edit][Delete]EDUCAUSE [Edit][Delete] May 17, 2006
This is a neat idea I hadn't run across before. "A Google jockey is a participant in a presentation or class who surfs the Internet for terms, ideas, Web sites, or resources mentioned by the presenter or related to the topic. The jockey's searches are displayed simultaneously with the presentation, helping to clarify the main topic and extend learning opportunities." You know, I'm beginning to think I should ask for multiple screens and projectors at my talks - a screen for the Google jockey, a screen for the audience live conference chat (aka, the backchannel), a screen for the photo montage, and more. Facebook.edu Is Not The Answer

By Stephen Downes - Stephen's Web. Catherine Howell[Edit][Delete]: Facebook.edu Is Not The Answer, EDUCAUSE Blogs [Edit][Delete] May 15, 2006
Let's capture the really important point first: we should not create 'educational versions' of students' favorite applications. Not simply because, as Catherine Howell suggests, they will not challenge students. But also because, as Cole comments, students wouldn't use them (at least, not in the same way). Because "they said things the U runs feel 'controlled.'" There is, as Ulises Mejias suggests, a connection between the software we choose and the social structures we set up. That's why I suggest we should be looking for specific properties in the software we select. What does this mean for educational software then. More...

How the Business Has Changed in The Last Few Days Alone

By Stephen Downes - Stephen's Web. Steve Safran[Edit][Delete]: How the Business Has Changed in The Last Few Days Alone, Lost Remote [Edit][Delete] May 10, 2006
"This is one of the easiest years to make predictions in some time: 2006 will be the year of video," I said in eLearn Magazine in January. This week proves that. In addition to the smaller items mentioned in this article (such as, TiVo offering commercials on demand), we saw internet video being made available for television sets, Warner brothers selling movies in BitTorrent, MSN launching original video content, and CBS launching a free ad-supported broadband channel. Internet Explorer 7 Checklists

By Stephen Downes - Stephen's Web. Unattributed[Edit][Delete]: Internet Explorer 7 Checklists, Microsoft [Edit][Delete] December 1, 2006
I have already run into issues with Internet Explorer 7 (its security settings effectively disabled an online business transaction form - of course the form didn't work at all in Firefox). Anyhow, this is a good checklist for designers and developers to review to prepare for IE7 visitors using your site. More...

Google Reader- I'm in Love

By Stephen Downes - Stephen's Web. Alan Levine[Edit][Delete]: Google Reader- I'm in Love, Cogdogblog [Edit][Delete]CogDogBlog [Edit][Delete] December 1, 2006
I'm not in love the way Alan is, but I am also using Google Reader - have been for a month or two now, switched just in time to avoid Bloglines's meltdown - and I have been mostly happy. What it doesn't have that I miss is a nice way to share my subscription list, which changes often. I can export my OPML file (which is here) but this isn't a nice web page you can easily browse. Wikipedia:School and University Projects

By Stephen Downes - Stephen's Web. Various authors[Edit][Delete]: Wikipedia:School and University Projects, Wikipedia [Edit][Delete] September 21, 2006
Useful page on Wikipedia that provides advice, examples and templates to assist in the use of Wikipedia in the classroom. "An advantage of this over regular homework is that the student is dealing with a real world situation, which is not only more educative but also makes it more interesting ("the world gets to see my work"), probably resulting in increased dedication.
