Google Has No Adsense.com

By Stephen Downes - Stephen's Web. Rachel Metz[Edit][Delete]: Google Has No Adsense.com, Wired News [Edit][Delete]Wired news [Edit][Delete] July 13, 2006
AdSense Consulting, which has owned adsense.com since 1996, has finally given up telling people we are not Google and is selling the domain name - Google, which has meanwhile stomped all over the small company's name, has no comment. The least they could have done is let the company run Adsense Ads. But no, not even that. Meanwhile, in another story, the National Post decided it liked a blog post and simply ran the post in the newspaper without permission or payment. More...

Ten Trends That Matter to Business

By Stephen Downes - Stephen's Web. Ross Mayfield[Edit][Delete]: Ten Trends That Matter to Business, July 12, 2006
These trends probably matter to other people too but if you're trying to make a living these days you have to appeal to 'business' (whatever that is). Perhaps that explains item number 2, 'overburdened public sector'. As though you could just wave your have and make health and pension costs go away? And perhaps by business responsibility becomes number 6, 'social cost'. "Business has never been loved, but there is a different tone, fueled by tech and edu." Perhaps most important is not the demographic shifts or the shortages of resource. More...

Windows Live

By Stephen Downes - Stephen's Web. Various authors[Edit][Delete]: Windows Live, Microsoft [Edit][Delete] July 10, 2006
Google has been getting a lot of publicity, but Microsoft has been quietly unveiling its own versions of online applications and services. This page links to beta versions of a dozen or so applications, including Expo, an online social marketplace, and Academic, articles from thousands of academic and research journals. My biggest complaint so far. More...

Washington Business Journal - Blackboard

By Stephen Downes - Stephen's Web. Various Authors[Edit][Delete]: Washington Business Journal - Blackboard, July 5, 2006
I followed what turned out to be a pretty uninformative link on a new Blackboard community product and ended up at this page - a summary of stories about Blackboard carried by a local Washington D.C. publication. I can't really explain the results ordering (what's so hard about ORDER BY crdate DESC?). The product? Well. More...

Google Maps Reads Google Earth Files...

By Stephen Downes - Stephen's Web. Tim Lauer[Edit][Delete]: Google Maps Reads Google Earth Files..., Education/Technology [Edit][Delete] June 19, 2006
As much as I have loved Google Earth, I have always felt limited by the fact that it is a desktop application, which meant that the nifty KML files it uses could not be used on the web. Now at least this capacity exists in Google Maps. Sort of. I tested the system using the instructions posted on the Google website. I first had to set the server's mime types - if your KML files are failing, this is probably why (see the very bottom of the instructions). Then, some of my KML files worked, like this [source]. A Wiki Situation

By Stephen Downes - Stephen's Web. Scott McLemee[Edit][Delete]: A Wiki Situation, Inside Higher Ed [Edit][Delete] June 14, 2006

Yet another academic writer wrestles ith the by now age-old question: whether to berate Wikipedia or to dive in and fix the thing. The presumption, of course, is that it's broken - a presumption not bolstered by the very interested commentary provided from Robert McHenry, the former editor-in-chief of Encyclopedia Britannica.
