We now have just 10 years to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). To date, the SDGs have been underfinanced. The annual financing gap to achieve the SDGs by 2030 currently sits at USD 2.5 trillion. More...

Learning Passionately
By Stephen Downes - Stephen's Web. Blended Learning?
Interesting. If you consider the concept of 'blended learning' you soon realize that many things can be 'blended', not just delivery models. Things like role, focus, and curricula. And if you can blend many things, then there is the possibility that different overt and covert curricula can be blended. "From this perspective the key affordances of e-learning, flexibility, community and individualisation are problematic. Against flexibility might be set a return to piecework and insecurity". More...

Informatology: Blended Learning
By Stephen Downes - Stephen's Web. Informatology: Blended Learning
Scott Wilson also presented to the British Council the other day and gave a talk that was very similar to my own (the examples differ, in some cases, though, and there was more emphasis on mobile communications). These are his slides. He notes, "I was also looking at some mobile technologies, and hoped to be able to demo some things, but time and again came face to face with mobile platform lock-in, whether by the phone OS or network provider, which is a real shame!" It is, and it's one of the major reasons I'm not a really fan of mobile. More...

The PERLA Framework: Blending Personalization and Learning Analytics
By Stephen Downes - Stephen's Web. The PERLA Framework: Blending Personalization and Learning Analytics
Mohamed Amine Chatti, Arham Muslim, International Review of Research in Open and Distributed Learning, 2019/02/28
From the abstract: "This paper discusses the Personalization and Learning Analytics (PERLA) framework which represents the convergence of personalization and learning analytics and provides a theoretical foundation for effective analytics-enhanced personalized learning." It's important to not that the authors distinguish personalization from adaptation (or adaptive learning systems). "Personalization is learner-driven; the system only helps learners decide what to do next." Anyhow, the framework is based on a cycle alternating execution and evaluation (described by feed-forward and feedback indicators respectively). More...
