The (Digital) Library Environment: Ten Years After
By Stephen Downes - Stephen's Web. Lorcan Dempsey[Edit][Delete]: The (Digital) Library Environment: Ten Years After, Ariadne [Edit][Delete]ARIADNE [Edit][Delete] February 16, 2006
Good article, from the recent issue of Ariadne, summarizing the evolution of library services in the digital age. What I appreciate most of all, I think, is the understanding in this article that library services need to become dynamic and integrated into the flow of a person's online experience, "supporting the remix of content and services in user environments, and developing digital curation services." There is an enormous need for intelligent information flows - consider this newsletter, for example, which serves just such a purpose. More...
How I Became a Librarian
By Barbara Fister. As the year finishes and the library becomes quiet, I find myself thinking about how I became a librarian. More...
Agreement From an Unlikely Source
By Matt Reed. Working from a basically libertarian perspective, the book tackles the question of college tuition increases. Given the source, I would have expected the usual villains in the libertarian narrative: “rent-seeking” liberal academics who use their sinecures isolated from the market to feather their own nests, or some variation on the theme. Why IT and the Library Should Work Together
Higher education IT departments and libraries have long had overlapping responsibilities, yet for the most part they have remained separate entities. Could it be time for a new kind of alliance. More...
Libraries and E-Learning
By Stephen Downes - Stephen's Web. Various authors: Libraries and E-Learning, Canadian Association of Research Libraries December 23, 2005
Librarians and libraries will play a key role in e-learning. This, not surprisingly, is the conclusion of a recent report from the Canadian Association of Research Libraries (CARL). The report "recommends that librarians take the lead in the consolidation of Learning Object Repository management and licensing practices, in order to bring an orderly approach to management and use of shared instructional across Canada." I would certainly hope that librarians find their future in protecting and supporting free access to information, rather than becoming front-people for publishers' licenses and access restrictions. Web 2.0: Building the New Library
By Stephen Downes - Stephen's Web. Paul Miller: Web 2.0: Building the New Library, Ariadne November 3, 2005
It was only a matter of time, I suppose, before we saw Web 2.0 morph into Library 2.0 (and I suppose I'm the last person who should be critical, hm?) but this article could have benefitted from a wider reading of the work on web 2.0 and a more modest approach than "Paul's Principles" of web 2.0. How Cold Is That Library? There's a Google Doc for That
By Colleen Flaherty. What a difference preparation makes when it comes to doing research in Arctic-level air-conditioned academic libraries (or ones that are otherwise freezing -- or not air-conditioned at all). More...
Digital Utes
By Stephen Downes - Stephen's Web. Jenny Levine: Digital Utes, The Shifted Librarian November 7, 2005
Another Pew report (is this a new one? I've lost track - they must be paid by the piece). The usual: "12 to 17-year-olds look to web tools to share what they think and do online. It also said they were much more likely than adults to read and have a weblog. The report found that those who did have blogs were far more likely to remix and share music and images." Summary with links to articles and commentary. More...
