Can Digital ‘Badges’ and ‘Nanodegrees’ Protect Job Seekers From a First-Round Knockout?

By Stephen Downes - Stephen's Web. Can Digital ‘Badges’ and ‘Nanodegrees’ Protect Job Seekers From a First-Round Knockout?
Steve Kolowich, Chronicle of Higher Education, 2014/12/01
This is a bit of a twist on the Chronicle's anti-technology bias: alternative credentials, such as badges, are not useful because robots do most of the hiring anyways, and they only look at the name of the institution and the degree. More...

Stephen Downes PhotoBy Stephen Downes - Stephen's Web. Kirkpatrick and Open Badges: Can do better!
Serge Ravet, Learning Futures, 2018/10/05
This is a nice blending of Kirkpatrick levels of course assessment and open badges. It begins as a criticism of Kirkpatrick's use of badges ("I find it outstanding that after a mere 3-hour training, participants receive a badge specifying that they are able, among other things, to 'plan and deliver training programs with business value in mind.'"). The Seven Deadly Sins Of Digital Badging In Education

Stephen Downes PhotoBy Stephen Downes - Stephen's Web. The Seven Deadly Sins Of Digital Badging In Education
Troy Markowitz, Forbes, 2018/10/01
I've been considering the use of badges in my upcoming MOOC and so this article resonated with me. Some of the key things to avoid: making the issuing of badges a manual process (imagine having to click on a button 3,000 times (let alone fill out 3,000 forms)); don't require students to 'apply' for badges (because the data suggest that they won't); make badges usable (locating them inside an LMS is not 'usable'); and make sure they actually measure something meaningful (which make it doubly hard to issue them automatically; I won't issue a badge for passing a multiple-choice test). A foundational badge system design

A foundational badge system design
Carla Casilli, Persona, March 23, 2014

One of the isssues with a badge system is granularity. On the one hand companies and institutions want large-objective top-down locked badges. On the other hand, individuals and small groups want more fine-grained flexible badges that can be created and awarded on the fly. This proposal addresses that by creating a three-tier interlocked badge system compliant with Mozilla's badge architecture. More...
