But its plan to boost foreign student numbers, announced by Prime Minister Shinzo Abe last month, could be jeopardised by rising political tension between Japan and its closest East Asian neighbours, which send the largest number of students to Japanese universities. China’s rapid rise in global science and engineering

In the last 10 years China has made formidable progress in science and engineering fields and it is now the world’s third largest producer of peer-reviewed research articles after the European Union and United States, according to a major report published by the US National Science Foundation. According to Science and Engineering Indicators 2014, out of the world’s 827,705 articles published in 2011, researchers in the combined 28 European Union countries produced 254,482 articles (31%), the United States 212,394 (26%), China 89,894 (11%) and Japan 47,106 (6%). No consensus amongst principals on joint university entrance exam

MACAU DAILY TIMESBy Catarina Pinto. As the Tertiary Education Services Office (GAES) plans a joint-entrance admission exam for students enrolling in one or more of the four Macau universities, the education sector still does not hold a consensual view on the matter.
Heard by GAES, several secondary schools have already provided their opinions on the standardized exam. Zélia Mieiro, vice-president of the Portuguese School of Macau (EPM) told the Times that the school is in favor of the joint entrance exam. More...

A quarter of Malaysians are now pursuing higher education: PM

By Rozanna Latiff. A quarter of Malaysians aged between 18 and 24 are now pursuing higher education, Datuk Seri Najib Razak said today.
The prime minister said the government has worked hard to increase access to education at all levels since 1959, when University of Malaya took in its first batch of 300 students.

More Tibetans in higher education

Almost 8,000 rural youngsters in Tibet Autonomous Region passed college entrance exams and matriculated in 2013, the regional education authority announced on Saturday.
The number accounts for 60 percent of the region's total higher education enrollment last year.
"Farmers and herdsmen make up 80 percent of the population of Tibet's 3 million people. Their children have the same rights to higher education as urban students," said Ma Shengchang, director of the regional education department. More...

Govt to continue funding public research universities

Govt may rope in private players to assess, accredit educational institutes

By Prashant K. Nanda. UGC, the apex education regulator, wants private entities to share the job of accreditation. So far the government’s preserve, the job of accrediting educational institutions may soon be handed over to private entities. India has 723 universities including institutions of national importance, 37,204 colleges and 11,356 professional schools offering diploma-level courses. 10 Die in Roof Collapse at South Korean University’s Orientation Event
