Better in Argentina Than in Brazil

http://www.insidehighered.com/sites/default/server_files/styles/large/public/the_world_view_blog_header.jpgBy Liz Reisberg. There is little that stresses me more than preparing to teach or give a talk in a country where I am not familiar with the culture. I have been doing research on higher education in Argentina for almost 25 years. I know quite a bit about the history of education, reforms during recent decades, how the system is structured, attitudes about teaching and learning, etc. I have a pretty good feel for the controversies, issues being debated, and challenges faced by most universities.  All of this helps me to plan my work better and target themes appropriately. I also know what issues I can joke about and which ones I dare not. Read more...

Welcome to the Palace of Ambiguity

http://www.insidehighered.com/sites/default/server_files/styles/large/public/library_babel_fish_blog_header.jpgBy Barbara Fister. Funny how sometimes you read an article and it feels like a smack on the forehead. Of course! Why didn’t I think of that before? Usually that means you had thought of it before, in vague, inchoate terms, but somebody else has put it into words. Bam. That’s what happened when I read  the preprint of an article by Wendy Holliday and Jim Rogers in portal: Libraries and the Academy titled “Talking About Information Literacy: The Mediating Role of Discourse in a College Writing Classroom.” Read more...

The NSA Vote

http://www.insidehighered.com/sites/default/server_files/styles/large/public/law.jpgBy Tracy Mitrano. I have written enough about this issue that has no need of rehearsing here.  So allow my comments on yesterday's vote to be brief. Fix the Electronic Communications Privacy Act in such a way that Internet technologies will comport with Fourth Amendment jurisprudence to correct the most significant problems inherent in the "Patriot Act." University's Namesake Gets a Google Shout-Out

HomeNot many universities see their names in Google's bright lights. But on Thursday, the search giant celebrated (through its most visible icon, the daily-changing Doodle on its home page) Rosalind Franklin, after whom suburban Chicago's Rosalind Franklin University of Medicine and Science is named. In U.S., Most Reject Considering Race in College Admissions

http://sas-origin.onstreammedia.com/origin/gallupinc/GallupSpaces/Production/Cms/POLL/ajayjuoyfk6x68ajzlfu3q.pngBy Jeffrey M. Jones. Sixty-seven percent say decisions should be based solely on merit. Two-thirds of Americans believe college applicants should be admitted solely based on merit, even if that results in few minorities being admitted, while 28% believe an applicant's racial and ethnic background should be taken into account to promote diversity on college campuses. Three-quarters of whites and 59% of Hispanics believe applicants should be judged only on merit, while blacks are divided in their views. Read more...

'Shake Up' for Higher Ed

HomeBy Scott Jaschik. President Obama vowed Wednesday that he would soon unveil a plan to promote significant reform in higher education -- with an emphasis on controlling what colleges charge students and families.
"[I]n the coming months, I will lay out an aggressive strategy to shake up the system, tackle rising costs, and improve value for middle-class students and their families. It is critical that we make sure that college is affordable for every single American who’s willing to work for it," said Obama, in a speech at Knox College. Read more...

Race equality in academia: time to establish black studies in the UK?

The Guardian homeBy Deborah Gabriel. With just 85 black professors in the UK, Deborah Gabriel says we need a more diverse curriculum for real change. If the same vigour and commitment that drive gender equality in higher education were directed towards race equality then better progress could be made in addressing the institutionalised racism that pervades the higher education sector. While women now account for 44% of all academics within UK universities (2011/12 HESA Staff Record), the percentage of black academics (combining black Caribbean, black African and black other) stands at 1.6%. College Enrollment Falls as Economy Recovers

http://graphics8.nytimes.com/images/misc/nytlogo152x23.gifBy . The long enrollment boom that swelled American colleges — and helped drive up their prices — is over, with grim implications for many schools. College enrollment fell 2 percent in 2012-13, the first significant decline since the 1990s, but nearly all of that drop hit for-profit and community colleges; now, signs point to 2013-14 being the year when traditional four-year, nonprofit colleges begin a contraction that will last for several years. Should University Systems Be Graded, Too?

http://i1.nyt.com/images/misc/nytlogo379x64.gifBy D. D. Guttenplan. LONDON — Depending on whom you ask, a proposed new international testing system will either be the next big thing in higher education or a pointless, expensive rankings exercise that will be used to criticize faculty at hard-pressed colleges and universities. At a meeting in its headquarters in Paris last month, the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development released a study on whether it would be possible to test what students around the world actually learn in colleges and universities. In November, the organization will decide whether to press ahead with the new system, Assessment of Higher Education Learning Outcomes, or Ahelo. Read more...

OECD Finds Strengths, Weaknesses in U.S. Career-Related Education

HomeThe U.S. system of providing career-related postsecondary training has both strengths and weaknesses, according to a report released Wednesday by the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development. "Extensive decentralization gives rise to many strengths, to diverse and flexible forms of provision meeting the needs of many groups of learners, to a rich field of policy development and innovation, involving state governments and many non-government organizations. The quality of data analysis and academic research available to support policy development is clearly outstanding," the report says. Read more...
