Too Risky for Boulder?

http://www.insidehighered.com/sites/all/themes/ihecustom/logo.jpgBy Scott Jaschik. Patricia Adler stunned her students in a popular course on deviance Thursday by announcing that she would be leaving her tenured position teaching sociology at the University of Colorado at Boulder. Adler said that officials told her that one of the highlights of the course -- popular year after year -- had to go. That is an annual lecture on prostitution (a topic covered in deviance courses nationwide). Read more...

Canada loses ground on literacy

By Carol Goar. Literacy advocates demoralized by global survey that shows Canada regressing. The word “depressing” pops up three times on the first page of the Toronto Dominion Bank’s latest report on Canadian literacy. Troubling, worrying, alarming and abysmal also figure prominently in the nine-page analysis. What prompted this unbanker-like outpouring from TD Economics was a survey of essential skills by the OECD (Organization of Economic Cooperation and Development) ranking 24 industrial countries on basic literacy and numeracy. Canada’s literacy score was a mediocre 11th. Its numeracy score was a below-average 14th. More...

TRU, TIB sign deal to move forward on aboriginal education

Kamloops Daily NewsBy Michele Young. A pole on the Thompson Rivers University campus will be flying the flag of the Tk'emlups Indian Band as the two signed a memorandum of understanding to formalize their co-operative relationship. TIB Chief Shane Gottfriedson and TRU president Alan Shaver shook hands and exchanged gifts Monday morning after signing the agreement.
"We truly believe the memorandum of understanding and the language in it speaks volumes on our relationship," said Gottfriedson.
The two dignitaries pointed out that TRU's roots began on the band land, as Cariboo College held its first year of classes there. Cariboo College was born on the TIB, now, like a growing child, it has matured into a university. More...

Christie Agrees to In-State Tuition for Undocumented Immigrants

New York TimesBy Kirk Semple. The New Jersey Legislature approved legislation on Thursday that would allow students without legal immigration status to pay in-state college tuition. Gov. Chris Christie planned to sign it on Friday, a spokesman said.
The bill’s passage was assured after Mr. Christie, a Republican, struck a deal with Democratic lawmakers, who agreed to a demand of his that they change the bill to remove a provision allowing undocumented immigrants access to state financial aid programs. More...

College presidents doubt President Obama's higher education rating system will work: Higher Education Roundup

http://media.cleveland.com/static/cleve/static/img/logo_v001.pngBy Karen Farkas. Most college presidents doubt that President Barack Obama's plan to promote affordable higher education will be effective, or that it will lead students to make better choices, according to a poll by Gallup and Inside Higher Ed. And the presidents believe the wealthiest colleges and universities will be most successful in the ratings system Obama has proposed, reported Inside Higher Ed. The 675 presidents who responded to the poll were given complete anonymity so they could answer without regard to the politics of opposing a plan that has become a top priority for the Obama administration. EdX: Expanding Education Beyond the American University

By Kristina D. Lorch and Conor J. Reilley. In May 2012, faculty from Harvard University and MIT teamed up to create a massive open online course (MOOC) platform for students and institutions of higher education alike. But unlike its for-profit MOOC peers Coursera and Udacity, edX—the new venture—was guided by more academic, pedagogical goals. By making its source code accessible to the public and licensing the distribution rights to its software, edX now allows participating institutions to adopt its platform for their own use and improve the existing code—for free. A model to help bring discoveries to the marketplace

http://www.universityaffairs.ca/images/BlogTheBlackHole.pngBy Jonathan Thon. In a previous post I made the argument that one way of recovering federally funded-research costs and bringing discoveries and innovations to the marketplace is by having governments included in intellectual property agreements. My guess is that getting universities to give up their patent rights and ability to claim  indirect costs from incoming grants are going to be the major hurdles in academic reform. To justify this income, research institutions should be tasked with turning basic research programs covered by government grants into profitable (and therefore sustainable) ventures. Indeed, this was a conclusion shared by a report released by the Science, Technology and Innovation Council, State of the Nation 2010, showing that while Canada has talent and resources in spades, it is not leveraging them effectively to take a global leading role in innovation. A National Transfer Network

http://www.insidehighered.com/sites/all/themes/ihecustom/logo.jpgBy Doug Lederman. More than one person told Chris Romer that his vision of creating a national network of high-quality community college programs and selective four-year colleges committed to enrolling their graduates was folly. It's hard enough to get community colleges and elite public and private colleges in a given area to articulate transfer agreements, let alone create something on a national scale, he was told. But the American Honors program that Romer and colleagues unveiled early this year has indeed created such a network, and it is beginning to bear fruit. Read more...

5 Things to Consider Before Transferring to a U.S. College

By Yao Lu. My first year as a college student did not go as well as I had hoped. I felt I was not challenged enough academically, and the college I attended was quite small, meaning there were few clubs and activities I really enjoyed. More...
