http://www.hastac.org/files/imagecache/homepage_50/pictures/picture-79-873560aec16bee4b69793f2fa0fbd715.jpgBy Cathy Davidson. I don't know about you, but just about all of my life is in the hands--or on the server, to be more accurate-- of a lot of people I don't really know.  How do I know if I can trust that they will make every effort to keep my data safe and secure? Are the institutions I trust trustworthy?  How do I know? More...

Higher education weighs in on common core

By Erin Timony. The “college- and career-ready standards” contained in the Common Core State Standards are more than a hopeful phrase.
In adopting the Common Core State Standards, states also agreed to adopt “college- and career-ready” standards, leading some to wonder what those standards entail and how the adoption of those conditions would affect institutions of higher education. More...

Welcome to College—Now Please Stop Thinking

By . A scandal at Canada’s University of Western Ontario shows just how censored higher education has become. When freshmen first arrived at Canada’s University of Western Ontario a few weeks ago, they were introduced not to cutting-edge research or “the best which has been thought and said” (in Matthew Arnold’s magisterial phrasing), but to a brazen, petty, and all-too-common act of censorship that infantilizes young adults even as it chills free speech and open communication among students and faculty alike. I’ll get to the responsible, adult part of the blog shortly.  But first a giddy update: The Dog is home!!!! (Insert mental pic of me doing the Snoopy dance.)  We had some wonderful volunteer helpers who helped us get the word out and used reported sightings to triangulate the best spot for a trap. Now she’s home! And she has a GPS collar in her future. Read more...

http://www.insidehighered.com/sites/default/server_files/styles/large/public/confessions_of_a_community_college_dean_blog_header.jpgBy Matt Reed. The Chronicle got one right.  It outlined yesterday some discontent among sociologists at the cost of attending the American Sociological Association annual conference.  If you don’t live in or near the host city, the combination of registration, airfare, hotel, and food can easy run over two thousand dollars for a single conference.  And the ASA isn’t unique in that. Read more...

http://chronicle.com/img/photos/biz/Ticker%20revised%20round%2045.gifBy . The American Association of University Professors has taken a formal stand in opposition to “trigger warnings,” or advance notices to students that instructional material might elicit from them a troubling emotional response. In a report issued on Monday, the AAUP argues that trigger warnings threaten academic freedom and the quality of instruction, and says there are better means of helping students who are the victims of trauma. http://www.universityaffairs.ca/images/BlogLeo_en.jpgBy Léo Charbonneau. We’re number one! According to the 2014 Education at a Glance report by the OECD, Canada has the highest percentage, among member countries, of adults aged 25-64 who have obtained a tertiary education – 53%. We’ve occupied that spot for some years now. The OECD average is 32%. More...

The End Of Neighborhood Schools

By Stephen Downes - Stephen's Web. The End Of Neighborhood Schools
Anya Kamenetz, NPR, 2014/09/04
So I found this interesting, especially the way the discussion looked at two major aspects of the New Orleans school reform: first, the conversion of the system to public to private charter schools (and consequent firing and de-unionization of the school system), and second, the conversion from neighborhood schools to a city-wide system that offers choice.
