A Quick Look at the Future of OER

By Stephen Downes - Stephen's Web. A Quick Look at the Future of OER
Stephen Downes, Mar 05, 2019, Open Education Week: 24-Hour Global CC Network Web-a-thon, Online, via Uberconference
This talk looks at the impact of new technologies – specifically, open data, cloud technologies, AI and distributed ledgers (blockchain) – on the future shape of OER – what they will look like, how they will be used, and what skills and knowledge will be needed to develop and use them. Does Artificial Neural Network support Connectivism’s assumptions?

By Stephen Downes - Stephen's Web. Does Artificial Neural Network support Connectivism’s assumptions?
Does Artificial Neural Network support Connectivism’s assumptions?, International Journal of Instructional Technology and Distance Learning, 2019/03/04
The answer to the question posed in the title is "yes, mostly" (and I would quibble with the places where the paper says they don't mesh) but the real value of the paper is a step-by-step examination of different types of neural networks used in machine learning and (especially) deep learning. "the only hope is to use unsupervised learning model in which  a learner should extract the pattern from given examples without explicit feedback. The repetition and relative similarity between objects in given examples may help a learner to cluster and combine different ideas together to come up with new object". More...

Jumping from one resource to another: how do students navigate learning networks?

By Stephen Downes - Stephen's Web. Jumping from one resource to another: how do students navigate learning networks?
Alaa A. AlDahdouh, International Journal of Educational Technology in Higher Education, 2019/03/04
The question posed here is how students draw links between different learning resources. "Connectivism has yet to recognize how learners form connections to the variety of resources," writes the author. "An often-overlooked stage in the process of forming connections is the evaluation stage. This kind of self-awareness of actions helps the learners judge the value of the node". More...

The Motivational Outcomes Of Connectivism Theory In EFL

By Stephen Downes - Stephen's Web. The Motivational Outcomes Of Connectivism Theory In EFL
Mohammad Borna, Mahboobeh Fouladchang, Modern Journal of Language Teaching Methods, 2019/03/04
This paper compares a connectivist instructional method with a communicative language teaching (CLT) method in the teaching of English and concludes that the "connectivism instructional method provide unique opportunities for increasing the self-efficacy and task value of students by increasing social intractions and diversity for choosing tasks." This isn't a result of the type 'treatment X improved test score Y' but I do think that it points to one of the wider values of a connectivist approach. More...

Psychopedagogical Predecessors of Connectivism as a New Paradigm of Learning

By Stephen Downes - Stephen's Web. Psychopedagogical Predecessors of Connectivism as a New Paradigm of Learning
Roberto Sánchez Cabrero, Óscar Costa Román, International Journal of Educational Excellence, 2019/03/04
The proposition advanced in this paper is that since connectivism draws on a number of precedent concepts, which are listed by the authors, it follows that connectivism should be seen as a new theory of learning. "This theoretical approach means an evolution from the existing theoretical knowledge instead of a real theoretical revolution, as it was stated in the initial thesis," write the authors. But there's a difference between drawing on previous theories, including the adoption of their explanatory framework, and drawing on them and offering a new explanation for what came before. More...

Recent Work in Connectivism

By Stephen Downes - Stephen's Web. Recent Work in Connectivism
Stephen Downes, Mar 04, 2019, LAK19, Phoenix, Arizona, via Zoom
In this presentation I look at how connectivism is being applied and understood in current literature. I look at connectivism as pedagogy, connectivism as a learning theory, some successes of connectivist methods, and look at connectivism from a wider perspective. Please see this Google Doc for full notes and references. [Link] [Slides]. More...

Eduserv Symposium - Virtual Worlds, Real Learning?

By Stephen Downes - Stephen's Web. Eduserv Symposium - Virtual Worlds, Real Learning?
Good summary of the proceedings from yesterday's Eduserv conference on Second Life. My only quibble is that the advice, "Second Life is here, now - use it," does not recognize the existence of various alternatives, a number of which were mentioned by several panelists. See also this summary by Shirley Williams. And Kathryn Greenhill offers a really nice detailed summary.

Jo Kay stayed up 'til one a.m. to watch my talk and then was disappointed, not because she disagreed with me, but because the wanted to see more emphasis on the projects and the potential. Fine - and that's what the other five speakers provided. And if I hadn't raised the issues (which are genuine) nobody would have. Is that a fair waiy to treat people who are trying to learn about the technology?

Angela Thomas, meanwhile, posted a summary of the sessions as seen through Second Life. John Kirriemuir posted a number of screen shots in his summary. And see Andrew Stewart's longish commentary, to which I've added a comment clarifying part of my argument. Barbara Dieu also commented, saying that my criticisms should not prevent people from experimenting with Second Life. More...

Wiki-Based Text for COMP 1010

By Stephen Downes - Stephen's Web. Wiki-Based Text for COMP 1010
Well I have a few minutes here in Toronto so I can send off a shortish newsletter. Next week's newsletters will come from the CADE-AMTEC conference in Winnipeg. Speaking of Winnipeg, this is pretty neat - third-year students are using a wiki to write a text for first-year students. More...

PaperVision 3D - a 3D Flash Engine

By Stephen Downes - Stephen's Web. PaperVision 3D - a 3D Flash Engine
What comes after Second Life? Well, you can be sure the developers at Adobe (Macromedia) haven't been idle. Mark Oehlert describes: "that shark you see was swimming around my head and I could use my mouse to look around a 360 degree arc as well as looking up and down..." Meanwhile, I love his new avatar. 41 Minutes Per Day...

By Stephen Downes - Stephen's Web. 41 Minutes Per Day...
Bebo is a social networking site, similar to MySpace. According to this study, students spend 41 minutes a day there - that's almost a quarter of the 200 minutes they spend online (just think what all that reading is going to do for their brains... fantastic! Much better than Gilligan's Island). "And what does education do to try to harness the skills being learned in there? Hmmm.... 'Could do better'. Well, we could just do it. The skills are there, the tech's there, all that's missing is the desire of those not in the know to learn". More...
