Mistletoe Offline

Stephen Downes PhotoBy Stephen Downes - Stephen's Web. Mistletoe Offline
Jeremy Keith, 24 ways to impress your friends, 2018/12/11
The title makes no sense but the article is definitely worth a read. It is about service workers. These are "technology that you can inject into a visitor’s device from your website. Once it’s installed, it can intercept any requests made to your domain." The case described in the article is one where the service worker handles the request when the website is offline (or when the website user is offline). More...

My advice for aspiring explainer journalists

Stephen Downes PhotoBy Stephen Downes - Stephen's Web. My advice for aspiring explainer journalists
David Roberts, Vox, 2018/12/13
There is a cross-over, I think, between what David Roberts calls 'explainer journalism' and the field of online learning. And though this article focuses in depth on the former, it has a great deal to teach educators as well. "It’s not that there are no unique skills involved. There are. But experience teaches them a hell of a lot faster and better than journalism school. Your goal is to get good at gathering facts, perceiving patterns, and telling stories. And the way you get good at that the same way you get good at anything else — by doing it a lot."

Warrant Canary Frequently Asked Questions

Stephen Downes PhotoBy Stephen Downes - Stephen's Web. Warrant Canary Frequently Asked Questions
Kurt Opsahl, EFF, 2018/12/13
The 'warrant canary' is a pretty good idea. When an online service provider receives a demand from the government, this demand is often accompanied with a requirement that it tell no one about the demand. So, for example, Yahoo can never inform you if the FBI demanded your personal information. More...

How to Be an Artist

Stephen Downes PhotoBy Stephen Downes - Stephen's Web. How to Be an Artist
Jerry Saltz, Vulture, 2018/12/03
Good advice that could be applied not only to art but to anything (substitute 'research scientist' for 'artist' and you get the same useful tips): "How do you get from there to making real art, great art? There’s no special way; everyone has their own path. Yet, over the years, I’ve found myself giving the same bits of advice. More...

The Academic Market in China: An Overview

Stephen Downes PhotoBy Stephen Downes - Stephen's Web. The Academic Market in China: An Overview
Tao Tao, The Scholarly Kitchen, 2018/12/03
This post is directed toward people trying to sell academic journal subscriptions in China, and thus has limited appeal on that front, but also in so doing offers a pretty good summary of the structure of China's higher education system, describing different types of institutions, and providing statistics on each, including the primary teaching and research focus overall. More...

Stephen Downes PhotoBy Stephen Downes - Stephen's Web. I quit Instagram and Facebook and it made me a lot happier — and that's a big problem for social media companies
Christina Farr, CNBC, 2018/12/03
This is yet another example of a genre called "quit lit". It's the post someone writes when they've quit something. These days, what they're mostly likely quitting is social media like Facebook and Twitter. More...
