Durant l’année universitaire 2017-2018, 697 000 étudiants ont perçu une bourse sur critères sociaux du M.E.S.R.I. En moyenne, 37 % des étudiants qui suivent une formation ouvrant droit à une bourse en bénéficient. Selon la formation et le type d’établissement, la proportion de boursiers est très variable. Plus de la moitié des étudiants dans les sections de technicien supérieur et assimilés (S.T.S.) sont boursiers (55 %), à l’université, la proportion de boursiers sur critères sociaux est proche de 40 % et de 30 % en classes préparatoires aux grandes écoles (C.P.G.E.).
