Experiences from the Use of Skolelinux: Use of Open-Source Software at Four Norwegian Schools

Experiences from the Use of Skolelinux: Use of Open-Source Software at Four Norwegian Schools
A set of four case studies describing the deployment of a Norweigan version of Linux in four Norweigan schools. The upshot is that the software is well suited to use in a school environment, there being "no pedagogical reasons" not to use it. Some issues were encountered translating Microsoft documents and some websites were found to support Internet Explorer only, but workarounds could be found. More...

IMS Question and Test Interoperability Gets Major Make-over

IMS Question and Test Interoperability Gets Major Make-over
This specification "concerns itself with three distinct functions: the actual format of a question, the format of a bunch of questions in a test, and the format and processing of the answers that come back. In terms of substantial change, the new version only really concerns itself with the form of question items." As the author warns, this specification isn't ready for prime time yet. More...

Corn Hill Nursery

Corn Hill Nursery
Days like this I wonder whether I'm getting old and ossified. On Extending HTML

On Extending HTML
Part 3. Now here's where it really gets interesting. As Dave Green in NTK writes, "Apple made a deal with Opera and Mozilla the same week to add enough to the browser plugin API to provide the same javascript objects on other platforms and browsers." What this means is that HTML will be extended, a move defended in this article, to include slider controls, search fields, a composite attribute on the img tag, and a canvas tag. More...

Dashboard

Dashboard
Part 2. Dashboard is the name of a feature being release in conjunction with Apple's new OS X Tiger. Like Konfabulator, Dashboard "home to a new kind of application called Widgets. Widgets are mini-applications written in JavaScript that are designed for fun as well as function." Now there have been complaints that Apple stole the idea from Konfabulator. More...
