European Alliance for SSH invites new members to join

In 2015, a group of European disciplinary organisations founded the European Alliance for SSH to be a voice for social science and humanities disciplines in science policy. In May 2017, EASSH launches a call to invite new members from universities, research institutes and other research organisations to join the campaign to ensure the continued space for social science and humanities research in European and national programmes.
Why is EASSH needed?
More and more policy makers want to address ‘grand challenges’ or ‘missions’, which demand multidisciplinary approaches to address complex interconnected problems.  Many of these most complex issues are social or have a large social dimension. EASSH was therefore formed to ensure that the ‘social and human dimensions’ are recognised in the design of research policies. More...

European Commission logoThe 2017 Edition of Key Data on Teaching Languages at School in Europe depicts the main education policies regarding teaching and learning of languages in 42 European education systems. It answers questions about what foreign languages are learnt, how long students spend studying foreign languages, the level of foreign language proficiency students are expected to reach by the end of compulsory education and what kind of language support is provided to newly arrived migrant students as well as many other topics. The indicators are organised into five different chapters: Context, Organisation, Participation, Teachers and Teaching Processes. A variety of sources were used to build the indicators, and these include the Eurydice Network, Eurostat, and the OECD’s PISA and TALIS international surveys. More...

What can we do to increase solidarity in schools?

European Commission logoWhat better place than at a school to learn and practice solidarity? As children gather to learn and play together, they can also be exposed to bullying or other difficulties caused by their special needs or by a lack of tolerance from their peers. To counter that and make schools a welcoming place for all, a number of strategies are possible, as explored in the recent European report on How to prevent and tackle bullying and school violence. A number of these strategies are also supported by Erasmus+ projects. More...

Key Data on Teaching Languages at School in Europe – 2017 Edition

European Commission logoThe numbers of lower secondary students learning two foreign languages is up compared with ten years ago. And most countries now have provisions to support migrant children who need to learn the language of their host country. These are some of the main results of a report on 'Key Data on Teaching Languages at School in Europe' published in May 2017 by the European Commission’s Eurydice network. Less positive is the fact that the level of ambition for learning a second foreign language is still remarkably low. It is also worth noting that more than half of language teachers in Europe have travelled abroad for professional reasons, many of them with the support of funding from EU programmes such as Erasmus+, the EU Programme for education, training, youth and sport.
