"Public Service Media and Democracy" conference in Prague 10-11 November 2016

Résultat de recherche d'images pour "coe.int"On 10 November 2016 in Prague, the President of the European Parliament, Martin Schultz and the Secretary General of the Council of Europe, Thorbjørn Jagland, will open a conference on ‘Public Service Media and Democracy’. The conference is jointly organised by the Council of Europe and its Parliamentary Assembly (PACE), European Broadcasters Union (EBU), the Czech Parliament and Czech Television. Hosted in the Chamber of Deputies of Parliament of the Czech Republic, the event will gather parliamentarians from Central and Eastern Europe, as well as regulators and Public Service Media managers. 2016 Exchange on the religious dimension of intercultural dialogue - The role of education in the prevention of radicalisation

It takes place at the Palais de l’Europe (room 1, Webcast), on 9-10 November 2016, following the World Forum for Democracy.
The Exchange provides a platform for dialogue between public authorities, religious communities and organisations representing non-religious beliefs, and broader civil society on topics of particular importance to the religious dimension of intercultural dialogue. More...

World Forum for Democracy (7-9 November 2016, Strasbourg) - “Democracy and equality: does education matter?”

Framework Convention for the Protection of National Minorities

Résultat de recherche d'images pour "coe.int"Political and economic upheavals and wars in the last centuries have spurred migrations to and within Europe which have created societies that are rich in ethnic, linguistic and cultural diversity. As a result, many minorities have been confronted with discrimination and even denial of citizenship. They have often been and are excluded from employment, housing, education and access to health services or justice. Many of them are under-represented in European governments and institutions which makes it difficult for them to find political redress to violations of their rights.
Protection of national minorities has always been on the Council of Europe’s agenda, but the issue acquired even more importance with the collapse of European communist regimes, extreme nationalism and conflicts in certain parts of Europe. More...

Hungary needs to strengthen use of and access to minority languages

Résultat de recherche d'images pour "coe.int"Strasbourg, 14.12.2016 – A report published today by the Council of Europe’s Committee of Ministers praises Hungary for having strengthened minority language policies, which have led to increased funding for the country’s rich linguistic diversity, but notes that gaps remain. The report includes recommendations towards the full application of the European Charter for Regional or Minority Languages in Hungary, together with a response from the Hungarian government. According to the report, Hungary has highly detailed and complex legislation governing national minority policies and the use of all 14 minority languages. Read more

Minority languages in Switzerland: situation by and large satisfactory; Italian and Romansh require additional support

Résultat de recherche d'images pour "coe.int"Strasbourg, 14.12.2016 – The Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe has just published its report on the application of the European Charter for Regional or Minority Languages in Switzerland and recommendations to the authorities, together with the response from the Swiss Government. The report highlights recent positive developments concerning the Part III languages – Italian and Romansh. Minority languages in the Netherlands: positive developments, but concern for regional or minority languages in the media

Résultat de recherche d'images pour "coe.int"Strasbourg, 14.12.2016 – The Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe has just published a report on the application of the European Charter for Regional or Minority Languages in the Netherlands and recommendations to the authorities, together with the response from the Dutch Government. The report reflects several positive steps, in particular as regards the Frisian language. New developments have been noted in education, but additional efforts are needed to further strengthen the teaching of and in Frisian. Read more

Minority languages in Serbia: progress observed in education; language use in administration should be strengthened

Résultat de recherche d'images pour "coe.int"Strasbourg, 29.04.2016 – The Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe has just published a report on the application of the European Charter for Regional or Minority Languages in Serbia and recommendations to the authorities, together with the response from the Serbian Government. The importance of protecting national minorities and their languages is well recognised in Serbia which enjoys a rich linguistic diversity with 15 regional or minority languages. The following languages have been given special protection under the European Charter: Albanian, Bosnian, Bulgarian, Bunjevac, Croatian, Czech, German, Hungarian, Macedonian, Romani, Romanian, Ruthenian, Slovak, Ukrainian and Vlach. Regional or minority languages: Slovakia must take steps to implement Charter

Résultat de recherche d'images pour "coe.int"Strasbourg, 29.04.2016 – The Council of Europe published a report on the implementation of the European Charter for Regional or Minority Languages by Slovakia, along with the comments of the Slovak authorities and the Committee of Ministers recommendations. The Charter, which entered into force in Slovakia in 2002, protects 10 languages: Bulgarian, Croatian, Czech, German, Hungarian, Polish, Romani, Ruthenian, Ukrainian and Yiddish. The report notes that Slovakia recently adopted a Human Rights Strategy, and that an action plan concerning the rights of persons belonging to national minorities is being prepared. Read more
