The Australian Council of Learned Academies (ACOLA) has reported that innovation in Australia is suffering from a lack of direction, short-termism and a haphazard approach.
Translating research for economic and social benefit examined innovation initiatives in 14 nations and found a clear link between national policy and performance. The 14 were: Finland, Denmark, Sweden, Germany, United Kingdom, Israel, United States, Canada, South Korea, Japan, Singapore, China, Brazil and Chile. More...

A vibrant capacity in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) is pivotal to increasing our nation’s productivity. Building on recent research commissioned by Australia's Chief Scientist to identify STEM skills shortages, this project will critically examine existing solutions to the STEM skills shortage in comparable countries and to ascertain which, if any, of those solutions could be usefully applied to the formation and maintenance of a STEM skills workforce and propose a set of options for increasing Australia’s productivity and international competitiveness. Researchers in Australia face many hurdles in establishing a stable career in their chosen field of research. To inform policy development, as part of the Australian Government’s Research Workforce Strategy, ACOLA was charged with exploring options to meet one of the priorities: that researchers are ‘supported to meet individual career needs and objectives’. Future Earth Australia has been established with funding from the Australian Council of Learned Academies to coordinate Australia’s participation in the global Future Earth Initiative, a new international platform for building and connecting global knowledge to intensify the impact of research and find new ways to accelerate sustainable development. AP21C is a major national multi-disciplinary project, involving all four Learned Academies, working closely with the vast network of ANDI partners.  AP21C will build on work done by the Australian Bureau of Statistics, and their November 2012 report, ‘Aspirations for our nation: a conversation with Australians about progress’ and review local, national and international best practice in this field.  The pilot will also set out plans for a 3 year research project built around 12 key progress domains, as well as an outreach strategy for ongoing engagement with Australians.
