The World-Wide Inaccessible Web, Part 2: Internet routes

International Review of Research in Open and Distributed LearningAdditional data for the follow-up study were collected in China. Using a ‘traceroute’ routine, the study indicates that webpage loading time is linked to the complexity of the Internet routes between Web users and the host server. It is indicated that distance educators can apply such information in the design of improved online delivery and mirror sites, notably in areas of the developing world which currently lack an effective infrastructure for online education. More...

The World-Wide Inaccessible Web, Part 1: Browsing

International Review of Research in Open and Distributed LearningTwo studies are reported, comparing the browser loading times of webpages created using common Web development techniques. The loading speeds were estimated in 12 Asian countries by members of the PANdora network, funded by the International Development Research Centre (IDRC) to conduct collaborative research in the development of effective distance education (DE) practices. An online survey tool with stopwatch-type counter was used. Integration of the High-tech and Low-tech in Distance Teacher Training in China: An insight from the case of Jiangsu University

International Review of Research in Open and Distributed LearningThis paper reports the result and subsequent exploration of the pilot multi-media in-service teacher training programme with BA degree (non-honour) ( English Language Education) undertaken in the past three years (2001-2004) in China’s distance education. Online Distance Teaching of Undergraduate Finance: A case for Musashi University and Konan University, Japan

International Review of Research in Open and Distributed LearningWe implemented a synchronous distance course entitled: Introductory Finance designed for undergraduate students. This course was held between two Japanese universities. Stable Internet connections allowing minimum delay and minimum interruptions of the audio-video streaming signals were used.
