The UK has too many over-qualified graduates taking up non-graduate jobs, according to a recent report by the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD). The paper, titled “
Over-Qualification and Skills Mismatch in the Graduate Labour Market,” compares the rapid expansion of the UK higher education sector to the much slower growth of the high-skilled labour market, and warns of the mismatch as a threat to the UK economy.
As many as 58.8% of UK graduates are in non-graduate jobs, a percentage only exceeded by two other OECD countries: Greece and Estonia.
The situation is unsustainable given that almost half of university graduates will not earn enough to repay their loans in full, according to government estimates.
