http://www.insidehighered.com/sites/default/server_files/styles/blog_landing/public/technology_and_learning_blog_header.jpg?itok=aQthgJ91By Joshua Kim. We need a word to describe the feeling of fear that is induced by clicking on the “Purchase Now” button when making an online flight reservation for travel to a work related conference. Read more...

iPads, Hotels, and Learning

http://www.insidehighered.com/sites/default/server_files/styles/blog_landing/public/technology_and_learning_blog_header.jpg?itok=aQthgJ91By Joshua Kim. Recently, I stayed at a Hilton hotel that had replaced the big paper information notebook you find in the room with an iPad. All the directions as to where to find the exercise facility, the room service menu, the key phone numbers and directions, the instructions on how to check out, and the listing of all the hotels amenities and local sites had gone digital. Communication, Privilege, and Community

http://www.insidehighered.com/sites/default/server_files/styles/blog_landing/public/technology_and_learning_blog_header.jpg?itok=aQthgJ91By Joshua Kim. I want to start by saying thank you to everyone in our community who has engaged in our discussion these past few days about communication, privilege and community. My hope is to share some things that I am learning, in the hope that we might find common ground and shared understanding as we all grapple with these issues. Read more...

On Labels, Institutional Sexism, and Dialogue

http://www.insidehighered.com/sites/default/server_files/styles/blog_landing/public/technology_and_learning_blog_header.jpg?itok=aQthgJ91By Joshua Kim. A strange this happened to me this past Friday. I became the guy on the Internet who was guilty of “mansplaining." Of engaging in “typical kinds of privileged and patriarchal writing." Of being the “rich white guy,” who is “paternalistic” and guilty of engaging in a “stunning act of hubris." I even got my first “open letter” asking me to publicly repent for my “typical sexist pattern of behavior”. Read more...

Pintsized Powerhouse

http://www.insidehighered.com/sites/default/server_files/styles/blog_landing/public/mama_phd_blog_header.jpg?itok=C5xGPD1aBy Laura Tropp. I once had a student who never made deadlines and was frequently absent from class. She always had an excuse (frequently one that involved some kind of personal problem). I kept reiterating to her that despite all these problems, she still needed to make class and deadlines or accept the consequences (a loss of points and access to information). Read more...

The Wages of Art

http://www.insidehighered.com/sites/default/server_files/styles/blog_landing/public/mama_phd_blog_header.jpg?itok=C5xGPD1aBy Susan O'Doherty. A few days ago, I was talking to a friend at my health club about a play I'm in rehearsal for. One of my neighbors, a professional actor (Brooklyn Heights is full of them) overhead and interrupted us, saying, "I didn't know you were an aspiring actress!" Read more...

Yes, Mo'ne Is a Hero, But ...

http://www.insidehighered.com/sites/default/server_files/styles/blog_landing/public/mama_phd_blog_header.jpg?itok=C5xGPD1aBy Susan O'Doherty. As the parent of an athlete who has played in some highly competitive leagues, I am well aware of the importance of instilling the principle of good sportsmanship in players. In high stakes situations, generosity and grace often aren't the natural responses, and they need to be drilled into kids (and sometimes parents) repeatedly to achieve any semblance of a civilized sports environment. Read more...

Supply and Demand

http://www.insidehighered.com/sites/default/server_files/styles/blog_landing/public/provost.jpg?itok=k-3W3N__By Herman Berliner. I was talking with a friend of mine who is a long term highly regarded faculty member. This person has stood the test of time for decades: an excellent teacher who is also a published scholar and is always willing to serve his department and his school. We were talking about the next generation of faculty and their commitment to service as well as the next generation of administrators. Read more...

HomeAuthorities say 147 people were killed in an attack by a violent Somali group on a university in Kenya Thursday morning, The New York Times reported. That number is much higher than were the initial reports. Christian students were the target at a university that educates both Muslim and Christian students.
