'Where Are They Now?'

HomeBy Colleen Flaherty. Individual horror stories about the tenure-track job market in the humanities abound, but data telling the whole tale are scarce. That’s been true since the mid-1990s, when the federal government stopped funding the tracking of humanities Ph.D.s’ careers in the national Survey of Doctorate Recipients. But the Modern Language Association is trying to close the data gap with a new analysis about job placement for English and other modern language Ph.D.s. Read more...

More Than Adjuncts

HomeBy Colleen Flaherty. The University of Denver has never been one of the many colleges where part-time, semester-to-semester faculty members lacking institutional support make up the majority of instructors. Denver employs relatively few part-time adjuncts, and those it does hire usually have other jobs and teach one or two courses based on their professional expertise. Read more...

We Can’t Judge Community Colleges’ Success by the Numbers

By . I am a community-college teacher jumping with joy at President Obama’s America’s College Promise proposal, which would undoubtedly send more students to community colleges. But I can’t help but ask: Doesn’t he know that, by federal accountability standards, we’re an abysmal failure? More...

A Literary Scramble for Africa

By . Hiring: an annual ritual at the MLA. This year the Yale English department advertised a position in the 20th and 21st centuries. What we were really looking for, though, was something much more specific: Anglophone world literature. More...

Journalism Curricula? Get Me Rewrite

By . A year ago, in February 2014, the metrics on journalism education were trending in worrisome directions. Enrollments were down at some of the most prestigious programs in the country for the second year in a row, and a Poynter Institute study revealed that journalism faculty members viewed their programs as far more central to the journalistic enterprise than their professional colleagues did. More troubling, almost 40 percent of educators themselves acknowledged that their programs were not keeping pace with changes in the industry. More...

If you don’t succeed, try again: Timed tests using specs grading

http://chronicle.com/img/photos/biz/castingoutnines-45.pngBy Robert Talbert. It’s been six weeks since the start of the semester, so it’s time for a brief update on the specifications grading “experiment” (although something being carried out in real life probably shouldn’t be called an “experiment”). So far it’s going quite well. More...

Weekend Reading: Deep Freeze Edition

http://chronicle.com/img/photos/biz/profhacker-45.pngBy . Where ever you are, ProfHackers, we hope you are staying warm! Record snow and cold temperatures have blanketed much of the U.S. Boston, as fellow ProfHacker Ryan Cordell can attest, is having a “Winter From Hell.” And yet, it could be worse: we could be in eastern Canada, where the snow is high enough in places to bury cars and houses completely. Cross-platform Calendar Management with Sunrise

http://chronicle.com/img/photos/biz/profhacker-45.pngBy . Last week I fielded a question from someone who was having difficulty syncing calendar events between her Google account and her iOS device. She was finding that events were syncing only one way, which of course was problematic. More...

Lessons from Teaching with Games

http://chronicle.com/img/photos/biz/profhacker-45.pngBy . The latest issue of Syllabus, an open access journal that explores the syllabus as a piece of scholarship that should be annotated and shared with the educational community, is entirely dedicated to Teaching with and about Games. As an advocate of games in the classroom, I was very excited when I first saw the call for this issue from editors Jennifer deWinter and Carly A. Kocurek, and I’ve just finished reading through it. Open Thread Wednesday: Revisiting Travel Computing

http://chronicle.com/img/photos/biz/profhacker-45.pngBy . Several years ago, I started my quest for the perfect travel computing solution. Academic travel places a lot of demands on our technology: often, we rely on computers for presentations at conferences, taking notes, and keeping up to date on other projects and meetings. For a few years I was able to rely almost entirely on an iPad and keyboard case for all my conferences, which offered a lot of portability if not much computing power. More...
