Vocational education and training: a road to excellence

Cedefop - European Centre for the Development of Vocational TrainingThe issue of permeability between different sections of education was the subject of two speeches Cedefop Director James Calleja gave at international conferences in September.
At the international congress on vocational and professional education and training in Winterthur (Switzerland) on 16 September, Mr Calleja addressed the question of whether vocational education and training (VET) is the end of the road or the beginning of a university career. He argued that, while both negative/positive answers are possible, VET is a lifelong learning process that may start with the acquisition of key competences and, possibly, lead to continuous professional development. La sélection à l’entrée de l’Université ne doit plus être taboue !

Alors que certains syndicats refusent d’entendre parler de sélection, il faut admettre que son interdiction entraîne un certain nombre de coûts supplémentaires pour l’Université. S’il est faux de dire qu’il n’existe pas de sélection à l’Université, puisqu’au cours de l’ensemble de la licence, elle se fait par l’échec (environ 19 % des bacheliers entrés dans le supérieur en sortent sans diplôme, soit environ 69 000 jeunes par an), il est en revanche vrai qu’il n’y a pas de restriction légale à l’entrée en L1. Le problème de la sélection est repoussé au M2, et les Universités ne s’en privent pas. Voir l'article...
