Professor Raewyn Connell, one of Australia’s foremost intellectuals on class, gender, education and intellectual labour is retiring. Her work has influenced generations of students and academics and changed and challenged popular and populist constructions of knowledge, of prejudices and of behaviours. Whilst walking the world stage for decades, Raewyn has also been a committed Australian academic and unionist and played a key role in last year’s collective bargaining campaign at the University of Sydney. If you are in Sydney on 5-6 September, try and get to these events.
Counterhegemonies and Anti-Inaugural, 5-6 September
On the occasion of Raewyn Connell’s retirement, the Faculty of Education and Social Work, together with Sydney Ideas, will be co-hosting a lecture by Raewyn on the evening of Friday 5 September in the Great Hall, University of Sydney, from 5.00 – 6.30pm.  “The Knowledge Industry and Counter-power: subversive futures for intellectual workers in neoliberal Australia”.
In this anti-inaugural lecture, the classic problem of the relationship between intellectuals and power will be explored.  Raewyn will discuss the changing shape of knowledge systems and professional work, explore the tensions in the contemporary knowledge industry, and propose democratic agendas for intellectual workers.
This will be followed on Saturday 6 September with an all-day conference “Counterhegemonies - intellectual work and social justice in changed times”. More...
