The Abbott Government's planned de-regulation of uni degrees to hit women the hardest

How could it be otherwise? The line has been crossed already, not by us but by the Abbott Coalition Government and their advocates and supporters, who are seeking to wind back the clock as they actively attack pro-women and feminist policies and perspectives. We cannot stand on the sideline, but have to cross the line ourselves.

Arabe III par Nouar Barakat

Ce cours est destiné à des étudiants ayant déjà acquis les bases et qui veulent perfectionner leur connaissances en travaillant sur des textes authentiques.
Les extraits que nous allons étudier porteront sur des thèmes variés: des sourates du Coran, des textes de Mille et une nuits, des passages du Livre des Couvents de Al-Chabouchti Kitab al-diyaraat (11ème siècle).
Il est possible de travailler sur des documents modernes si les étudiants le désirent (par exemple Mahmoud Darwich).

Guidance for national networks for collaborative outreach

In its announcement on changes to the National Scholarship Programme in November 2013, the Government announced funding of £25 million for the development of a national outreach network, to support collaborative approaches in delivering higher education (HE) outreach activity to all state-funded secondary schools and colleges (www.publications.parliament.uk/pa/cm201314/cmhansrd/cm131128/wmstext/131128m0001.htm). This ring-fenced funding was subsequently confirmed in the Government’s grant letter to HEFCE of February 2014.

The memorandum of assurance and accountability between HEFCE and the institutions we fund sets out the terms and conditions for payment of HEFCE grants. This memorandum should be read in conjunction with the ‘funding agreement’ for each institution, which gives specific conditions, funds available and educational provision agreed in return for those funds. This document supersedes HEFCE 2010/19.

Birkbeck awarded £1.47 million to pioneer ways to combine work and study

HEFCE logoBirkbeck, University of London, has received £1.47 million from the HEFCE Catalyst Fund to explore innovative approaches and opportunities for combining work and study.
The three-year Intensive Part-time project will enable Birkbeck to develop new undergraduate and postgraduate courses which acknowledge the demands of intensive evening study combined with other activities such as daytime work or caring for a family, thus allowing students to better manage such demanding combinations. Presenting VET to the Commission

Cedefop - European Centre for the Development of Vocational TrainingOver 35 people working at the European Commission took part at a lunchtime presentation of Cedefop and its work, organised by the Directorate General Education and Culture (DG EAC) on 20 June, in Brussels.
Cedefop Director James Calleja focused on the agency’s role in helping the Commission devise and implement vocational education and training (VET) policies and analysed the parameters for 2015’s work programme.
Senior expert Eleonora Schmid informed participants about the findings of the 2014 VET policy monitoring report, which will be the theme of a special conference in Thessaloniki, in September.
During the discussion that followed, Commission colleagues from DG EAC and DG Employment enquired how Cedefop could further support Member States in view of the recently launched apprenticeship reviews in Malta and Lithuania. More...

Employee skill assessments lack links to national validation systems

Cedefop - European Centre for the Development of Vocational TrainingCedefop report finds that to best serve individuals, validation of non-formal and informal learning must take experience of companies into account.
Most of the European debate on validating non-formal and informal learning focuses on how such mechanisms are organised within national education and training systems. Meanwhile, many companies systematically assess employees’ competence and skills, mainly for purposes of recruitment and to formulate personnel management and training strategies. A new Cedefop study, now out in print, has found that most such in-company assessments are not linked to national validation schemes. More...
