By . In a new book, “Degrees of Inequality: How the Politics of Higher Education Sabotaged the American Dream,” Cornell University professor Suzanne Mettler wrote that although the United States used to be the world leader in higher education with respect to graduation rates and lower- and middle-income student access, that’s no longer true. Performance funding for higher education moves forward

By Rudi Keller. A proposal to substitute performance measures for political power in the distribution of higher education funds moved a step closer to becoming law Tuesday with a quick and friendly hearing in the House Higher Education Committee. There are unresolved issues on the proposal, which has passed with variations in both chambers. The committee held a hearing on the Senate version, sponsored by Sen. David Pearce, R-Warrensburg, which excludes community colleges from the performance distribution and requires legislative review of changes in the performance standards. More...

Special higher education funding gets approval, but also questions

By Julia O'Donoghue. Louisiana lawmakers gave Gov. Bobby Jindal's $40 million workforce incentive program preliminary approval Monday. The Thorny Politics of Higher Education Reform

By Andrew Kelly. Last week I wrote about the “college conundrum” and the opportunity it presents for conservatives. The basic argument: college is simultaneously more expensive, less valuable, and more important than ever before. What families need is a more robust set of postsecondary options to choose from, meaning we should focus reform energy on the supply-side of higher education. More...

Plan for state to fund prison college education courses dies in budget talks, Cuomo administration source says

Two weeks after the state DREAM Act failed to pass the Senate, a plan to provide college education courses to prison inmates has also died.

College degree gender gap widens with younger Gen Xers, study finds

There’s a growing gender gap when it comes to the youngest members of Generation X and college.
A federal survey of about 9,000 young men and women born during the years 1980 to 1984 shows a big disparity when it comes to higher education, with women a third more likely to have received a bachelor's degree by age 27. While it has long been known that women are outpacing men when it comes to pursuing higher education, the extensive study by the Bureau of Labor Statistics highlighted several numbers that show the trend is accelerating.
