Taxonomy of mobile apps for learning
By Daniel Bernsen. To distinguish different types of mobile applications for learning, the following categories may be helpful:
- 1) the app is developed for (a) the general public - (b) several groups of users – (c) one specific group of users
- 2) the app is (a) free of charge - (b) single payment - (c) regular payment
- 3) contents are (a) available online – (b) they can be partly downloaded - (c) they can be downloaded completely
- 4) contents can (a) only be consumed – (b) contents are georeferenced – (c) user can communicate and produce own content
- 5) contents are structured around (a) a topic - (b) an institution - (c) a space
- 6) the use of the app is (a) static – (b) interactive – (c) collaborative
- 7) while learning with the app, (a) everything is explained – (b) the user has to find answers and solutions himself – (c) the user has to create his own questions and the app is offering an environment for enquiry-based learning.
