Student or Professional?

http://www.insidehighered.com/sites/default/server_files/styles/blog_landing/public/Screen%20Shot%202011-12-12%20at%2012.29.48%20PM.png?itok=ITDqfJNPBy Kelly Hanson. One of the best pieces of advice I ever received about graduate school came during my last semester of coursework. The professor, while talking more broadly about academia, said off handedly, “You’re more than just a graduate student, you know.” And it was so simple. So obvious. I already knew it. Except I didn't really know it. In that moment, I had the ultimate grad school epiphany. Work was not some constant thing that life occasionally interrupted; dinner was not a break from work; sleep was not a break from work; going out with friends was not a lack of productivity; and catching up on a TV show was not simply a reward for having worked all day. Life doesn’t interrupt work; work interrupts life. As David Harvey has so eloquently noted, academic labor can permeate the entire day, and in contemporary academic professions, there is often no clear line between personal time and work time. The Job Search and the Foreign Dilemma

http://www.insidehighered.com/sites/default/server_files/styles/blog_landing/public/Screen%20Shot%202011-12-12%20at%2012.29.48%20PM.png?itok=ITDqfJNPBy Christopher Garland. Two months ago, on a particularly sweltering afternoon at a large, southern R1 university, I bumped into Arun, a fellow PhD student in the humanities. Facing a job market that is at best “uncertain” (seemingly one of the most popular euphemisms), we chatted about the general trials and tribulations that face all graduate students: getting specific application materials together, finishing the dissertation, and trying to "move on." Apart from the shared experience of anxiety about cover lettersCVs, and job postings, we discussed another aspect of the job search that affects a significant segment of this country's higher education workforce. If we "foreigners" want to stay in this country and in the field in which we’ve worked so hard to make our mark, we have to find an academic job. Read more...

Congress Ends Fiscal Impasse, But Fights Loom for Higher Ed Funding

http://www.insidehighered.com/sites/all/themes/ihecustom/logo.jpgCongress passed legislation Wednesday night to re-open the federal government and increase the nation’s borrowing authority to avoid a default on its obligations. Lawmakers voted to fund the government at the same level as this year through mid-January, ending a 16-day shutdown that, among other things, halted military tuition assistance and stalled a wide range of academic research. But the measure keeps intact the automatic government spending cuts for the current fiscal year, known as sequestration, at least through January 15. Higher education advocates have blasted those cuts as detrimental to scientific research. The cuts, which took effect in March, have already reduced federal research funding by billions of dollars and prompted universities to lay off researchers and close laboratories. Read more...

Study Finds Higher Rates of Student Loan Borrowing, Fewer in Repayment

http://www.insidehighered.com/sites/all/themes/ihecustom/logo.jpgStudents who completed an undergraduate program in 2007-8 were more likely to borrow money to pay for college but less likely to be repaying those loans within a year of graduation compared with their counterparts who graduated in 1992-93 and 1999-2000, a new federal report shows.
The report, released Thursday, analyzes the borrowing and repayment trends of bachelor’s degree recipients within a year of graduation for three cohorts of students. Read more...

Citing Shutdown, U.S. Cancels Gainful Employment Negotiating Session

http://www.insidehighered.com/sites/all/themes/ihecustom/logo.jpgThe U.S. Education Department, citing the partial shutdown of the federal government, has canceled the second round of negotiations over regulations on vocational programs at community colleges and for-profit institutions.
The department will reschedule the negotiated-rulemaking session when the government reopens, Lynn Mahaffie, the acting deputy assistant secretary for policy, planning and innovation, wrote in a letter on Friday to members of the rule making committee. Read more...

Will 'U.S. News' Ignore the ABA?

http://www.insidehighered.com/sites/all/themes/ihecustom/logo.jpgSome law school deans thought recent communication from U.S. News & World report indicated that the magazine's rankings were about to ignore the recommendations of the American Bar Association. It turns out that U.S. News is preserving that option, but hasn't decided what to do. At issue is one of the recommendations of a special ABA panelthat last month proposed numerous changes in legal education. One of the focuses of the ABA panel was the widespread criticism that law school is too expensive and that, at many law schools, spending that forces up tuition rates may not be improving the student experience. Pan-African University selects first 193 masters students

http://enews.ksu.edu.sa/wp-content/uploads/2011/10/UWN.jpgBy Maina Waruru. The African Union-backed Pan-African University has reached another milestone with the selection of the first intake of masters students for three of its institutes, in Cameroon, Kenya and Nigeria. The 193 pioneer students from across the continent are to start later this year.
The three Pan-African University (PAU) institutes are the most advanced among five hubs being set up in existing universities in Africa’s five regions. The North African institute will be located in Algeria, while Southern Africa has yet to settle on a host.
Each regional institute will eventually be linked to 10 PAU centres under the same research theme, located in different countries across the continent, to create a network of programmes that comprises the Pan-African University.
The PAU is aimed at revitalising African higher education and at boosting research and postgraduate training.
The masters students were selected from thousands of applicants and their studies will be fully sponsored by the African Union. PhD student selections are expected to begin next year. More...

Death of the Humanities

http://www.insidehighered.com/sites/all/themes/ihecustom/logo.jpgBy Se-Woong Koo. In all those years I was pursuing a Ph.D. in religious studies, the question of what my profession really stood for rarely came up in conversation with fellow academics, save for occasional moments when the position of the humanities in higher education came under criticism in public discourse. When such moments passed, it was again simply assumed that anyone entering a doctoral program in the humanities knowingly signed on to a traditional career of specialized research and teaching. Differentiation vs. Discrimination

http://www.insidehighered.com/sites/all/themes/ihecustom/logo.jpgBy Doug Lederman. The Obama administration is toughening its regulation of for-profit colleges in numerous straightforward ways, most notably and publicly by taking another shot (after a federal judge blocked the last one) at drafting rules requiring vocational programs to prove that they are preparing students for "gainful employment." But advocates for the colleges and other, more independent observers accuse administration officials of discriminating against for-profit institutions in a less-visible way, too -- and twisting federal statutes to do so.
