Med Students Earn Credit by Editing Wikipedia Articles

http://www.insidehighered.com/sites/all/themes/ihecustom/logo.jpgMedical students can earn academic credit at the University of California at San Francisco for editing content on Wikipedia. Fourth-year medical students in a new class will be editing articles, adding images, reviewing edits and adding citations to support unreferenced text. They will focus on editing 80 frequently used articles that have low levels of quality. Wikipedia is a widely used reference for health topics, but medical entries can lack sources and have gaps in content. Read more...

Higher Education in 2020

http://www.insidehighered.com/sites/all/themes/ihecustom/logo.jpgWhat will higher education look like in 2020? A new report from the Britain-based Observatory on Borderless Higher Education draws on interviews with 21 international education professionals in an attempt to answer just that. Here are a few of its main findings:
On MOOCs (massive open online courses), their impact “on pedagogy and university business models will be profound but an evolutionary shift rather than an avalanche of change.” Read more...

Khan Academy en Español

http://www.insidehighered.com/sites/all/themes/ihecustom/logo.jpgThe online learning website Khan Academy has begun translating its video lessons into Spanish, a spokeswoman recently confirmed. The site already features portals that link non-native English speakers to video lessons in English, but translating the more than 100,000 practice problems and video lessons into a different language marks a first for the site. The spokeswoman said about 95 percent of the practice problems and about 2,000 video lessons have so far been translated into Spanish, which means Spanish speakers visiting the new site will see some content in English for the time being. When Rating Colleges, Think Diving

http://www.insidehighered.com/sites/all/themes/ihecustom/logo.jpgBy Walter M. Kimbrough. About one month ago, President Obama announced plans for sweeping changes in higher education. In short, he wants the system to be much more efficient, affordable, and timely. Numerous reports have indicated the cost of higher education has increased at rapid rates. Bloomberg indicated that since I started college in 1985, the cost has risen by 500 percent. Read more...

What the Study Didn't Show

http://www.insidehighered.com/sites/all/themes/ihecustom/logo.jpgBy Edward Kazarian. The National Bureau of Economic Research this month issued a working paper containing a preliminary report on a study of the learning outcomes of students in courses taken during their first term at Northwestern University. The study considers an impressively large sample, "15,662 students taking 56,599 first-quarter classes" and, its authors claim, offers clear statistical evidence that the students learned more in courses taught by non-tenure-track faculty members than in courses taught by tenured and tenure-track professors. This Is Tenure?

http://www.insidehighered.com/sites/all/themes/ihecustom/logo.jpgBy Todd C. Ream. The most famous of us all are not real. True, scholars such as Albert Einstein and J. Robert Oppenheimer were once recognized by almost any sector of the American public.  In fact, they were so well-recognized that Einstein’s hair and Oppenheimer’s pork pie hat were alone representative of their celebrity. A theoretical physicist, an astrophysicist, an applied physicist, and an engineer are now arguably as well recognized as the Einsteins and Oppenheimers of days past. Read more...

Mini MOOC Minors

http://www.insidehighered.com/sites/all/themes/ihecustom/logo.jpgBy Carl Straumsheim. The Massachusetts Institute of Technology will this fall package some of its online courses into more cohesive sequences, just as edX prepares to roll out certificates of completion using identity verification. Seen together, the two announcements may provide a glimpse at what the future holds for the massive open online course provider. The “XSeries” sequences add a new layer of structure to MITx, the institution’s section of the edX platform. Read more...

Validation Required

http://www.insidehighered.com/sites/all/themes/ihecustom/logo.jpgBy Scott Jaschik. As several colleges over the last 18 months have admitted to submitting false data to U.S. News & World Report and other organizations that compile rankings, U.S. Newshas insisted that there is no broad problem or need for a new system to verify the accuracy of submissions. But on Saturday here at the annual meeting of the National Association for College Admission Counseling, the ethics committee of the association announced an additional mandatory requirement to respond to all the false reporting.
