Gone are the days when the hire of a university president was based primarily on a lifetime of scholarship and academic credentials that resonated with faculty. Gone, too, are the days when the president was expected to focus on internal governance and maintaining the institution's status quo. Increasingly, university leaders are under relentless pressure to raise private funds to protect and grow colleges and universities. And while for the president fundraising is often experienced as another full-time role, the effort must be balanced with the challenging demands of campus leadership. More...

College enrollment plummeted by half a million students in fall 2012 after several years of strong growth, the U.S. Census Bureau says. The number of graduate and undergraduate students fell last year after increasing by 3.2 million between 2006 and 2011. The decline was led by a drop of 419,000 in students 25 and older. The number of young students fell by only 48,000. More...

http://t2.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcSUa0Fk_7FQscWtrZHpz8OJg_QGcHVj2y63B7yEHt5K8aA7JDrjTD2O-wAmerica’s immigration system does not meet our needs and has not done so for years. A recent study found that reform measures like those featured in the bill just passed by the U.S. Senate would add $903 million to the North Carolina economy and create over 11,000 jobs – in the first year alone. I am hopeful that the U.S. House of Representatives can seize the opportunity that will lie before it and pass a workable immigration reform plan this year. More...

http://t2.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcSUa0Fk_7FQscWtrZHpz8OJg_QGcHVj2y63B7yEHt5K8aA7JDrjTD2O-wKiersten Slawter didn't have to go far to find her dream college. The Berks County native, a graduate of Twin Valley High School, knew Albright College was her top choice the moment she stepped on campus.
But her mother and father had a hard time getting past its roughly $47,000 price tag for the coming academic year's tuition and fees. They suggested she consider some of the less-expensive state universities, so she applied to Shippensburg, Bloomsburg and Millersville. More...

Is standardized testing for colleges a necessary evil?

http://t2.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcSUa0Fk_7FQscWtrZHpz8OJg_QGcHVj2y63B7yEHt5K8aA7JDrjTD2O-wStandardized testing in K-12 education is a perennial hot button issue. Proponents feel that measuring knowledge in these rigid ways helps lift the entire educational system. Critics say the measurements do nothing but encourage “teach to the test” methods and narrow the scope of what instructors are able to teach if they want to have acceptable test results. These arguments are nothing new, but they are now seeing a new audience. More...

Increasingly, universities are looking at ways to enable greater accessibility while maintaining acceptable usage policy. Offering an easier, more flexible and cost-effective approach to network access control (NAC), institutions are deploying ForeScout CounterACT to gain complete visibility and control of every device and user connecting to the networks.
