‘One-third of PhD recipients work in higher education’

Only a third of those who have earned doctoral degrees in Israel are employed by the universities and colleges, according to a survey conducted by the Central Bureau of Statistics for the National Council for Research and Development in the Science, Technology and Space Ministry and released on Monday. This phenomenon – that a third of people with advanced degrees do not find a place for their research abilities in the job market – encourages the brain drain and indicates the failure to take advantage of the abilities of highly trained manpower. Students given role in university reforms?

The National Union of Students (NUS) has been asked to help regulate institutions as part of the Government's latest bid to reform higher education.
The move is part of a plan by ministers to give more powers to the Higher Education Funding Council for England (HEFCE) - the body which hands grants to universities for research and teaching. Read more...

Online Education Startup Coursera Raises $43 Million

Online education company Coursera is fast becoming an investor’s pet with a new $43 million round of funding. Coursera, which provides hundreds of courses online, said Wednesday it raised the Series B financing from new investors Laureate Education Inc., the World Bank’s investment arm, LearnCapital Venture Partners, GSV Capital and venture capitalist Yuri Milner. Previous investors Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers and New Enterprise Associates, which invested $16 million in Coursera last year, boosted their stakes in the latest round. Read more...

Why the MOOC cannot trump the campus

Visa change is driving overseas expansion

When the UK Border Agency last year tightened controls on international students coming into Britain, it prompted an increase in the number of institutions looking to establish themselves overseas. The restriction on overseas students coming to the UK, particularly from India, has had a major impact on university revenues. University's offer of credit for a MOOC gets no takers

For students, it meant a chance to get college credit on the cheap: $89, the cost of the required proctored exam, compared with the $1,050 that Colorado State charges for a comparable three-credit course. Graduate employability and the social good

Higher education is a human right and, as such, it must be available to everyone. The European Students’ Union, or ESU, recommends that our whole society come together with regard to higher education development. An anti-education Ministry of Education

But Ukrainian higher education still needs fundamental reforms. Graduate unemployment and ‘over-education’ rising

As a new batch of graduates emerged from Vietnam’s universities in recent weeks, the country was facing twin problems of increasing unemployment among young people and a phenomenon of ‘over-education’ – graduates who fail to find jobs that use their skills. Incentives for researchers drive up publication output

Stellenbosch University in South Africa is cementing its reputation as a leading research institution by rewarding its most productive researchers with handsome incentives, to boost publication rates. Several universities – and the government – are employing incentive strategies to drive up research production. Fifty awards were given out recently to 39 Stellenbosch academics who had made the biggest contribution to accredited publications in 2011. Read more...
